If transwomen want equality with women then let's put a tiny barbie sized statue of one on a plinth, like the abomination that was the Mary Wollstonecraft statue.

I went and saw these today. I didn't properly read the blurbs on all of them, just the ones I liked, so I didn't realise this was to do with tw.

Regardless of what it's supposed to represent I didn't think it was very good and I don't think it would work well on the plinth because the most visually interesting aspect is the detail of the faces and it would be difficult to get close enough to see that. From the distance of the average viewer it would look about as interesting as the small picture in the guardian article.

I voted for the grain silos but also like bumpman.

ChewtonRoad · 24/05/2021 21:23

Of those on offer I like the grain silos.

Alternately, how about a blender overflowing with (female) vipers? Whether Ninja, Magimix, Kenwood, or bog-standard Cookworks brand let's have a big one. The vipers can be interesting colours - let's say green, white and violet.

Skysblue · 24/05/2021 21:24

There is some much much better art on the shortlist and which ends up on the plinth is being put to a public vote.

So go vote!

LangClegsInSpace · 24/05/2021 21:25

Also she says she wants to create a wall of resistance but she's making them out of gesso so they will slowly dissolve in the rain Confused

LangClegsInSpace · 24/05/2021 21:27

That sounds fab Chewton, you should find out how to enter for next time.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/05/2021 21:28

Don’t suppose we could have an actual proper Mary Wollstonecraft since they got it so badly wrong the first time could we?

They'd never put it on the fourth plinth, it would have to have some sort of twist to it. The sculptures there are only temporary anyway.

It would be good to have a proper, permanent, commemorative statue of her somewhere.

I didn't like Hambling's sculpture but I don't think there's anything wrong with an artist interpreting her subject however she wishes. The problem was that everyone was looking forward to getting a commemorative statue which is a quite different thing from an artist's sculpture. A statue is about the person it represents whereas a sculpture is more about how the artist sees or thinks of them.

The article's link explaining Tzompantli doesn't work, but here's a previous Guardian piece: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/11/mexico-templo-tower-of-skulls-archaeologists-aztec

" An important aspect of Aztec warfare was the capture of enemy warriors to serve as sacrificial victims, which is evident from the number of warriors found sacrificed around Aztec structures. One conquistador, Andrés de Tapia, was given the task of counting the skulls on the tzompantli at Tenochtitlan and estimated that there were 136,000 skulls on it.However, based on numbers given by Taipa and Fray Diego Durán, Bernard Ortiz de Montellano has calculated that there were at most 60,000 skulls on the Hueyi Tzompa.". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tzompantli

This was terror on a huge scale. If it's wrong to bandy around the word 'holocaust', it also seems OTT to compare the plight of 'transwomen' in the UK with the ritual slaughters of pre-conquest mezzo-America.

@Erikrie

Maybe we could have a plinth featuring all the murdered women in the UK. Oh, wait, there wouldn't be enough room would there.
Sadly true.
ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2021 08:28

I like the silos but they look a bit too much like planters. 'Antelope' seems to have a quiet dignity which I think would work well on the plinth.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/05/2021 08:31

OTT in a completely predictable way though.

I think the crowdfunder led people donating money to think that would be the case.

So another sign that LGBT is now T

But imagine the visual impact if they did it as a tower reaching to the sky . . .
MondayYogurt · 25/05/2021 12:24

I voted for Antelope.
