AN event celebrating equality of rights for women is due to be held on Friday.

The occasion will recognise the Convention of the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and will be hosted by Social Security Minister Judy Martin and International Development Minister Carolyn Labey.

CEDAW is an international treaty – adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979 – that aims to reduce discrimination against women and girls globally, and was extended to Jersey earlier this year.

Due to Covid-19, only a limited number of guests will attend the event in person, and the location is yet to be confirmed.

However, Islanders will be able to participate virtually between noon and 2.30pm on the day by following links on the government’s social-media pages.

Deputy Labey said: ‘I have been pursuing the work and extension of CEDAW to Jersey for many years and therefore I am delighted to be co-hosting this event as this work finally comes to fruition.’

There will also be a number of international guests in attendance, including Yamina Karitanyi – the Rwandan High Commissioner to the UK.

Deputy Martin said: ‘As an island, we are committed to gender equality and this is a great opportunity to raise awareness of CEDAW, the work that we are doing to improve women’s rights, and address what more needs to be done.’
