FOI about Stonewall

Does anyone know if there's ever been a FOI on how much public money Stonewall has received? Or is this information available elsewhere?

Stonewall aren’t subject to FOI themselves as they’re not a public body. I doubt anyone else has any record of how much public money they’ve had, as you’d have to get the figures from each public body separately (that includes schools, NHs organisations, etc).

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/05/2021 18:28

Oh I see, that makes sense. I wonder if anyone has added it up? Wink

Their accounts might help.

AfternoonToffee · 23/05/2021 18:31

Is there a breakdown in their accounts?

Not exactly what you’re asking, but you can get quite a lot of info from their publicly available (via companies house website) accounts:

find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02412299/filing-history

Includes info on staff salaries.

And shows they made a loss.

Next accounts expected to be file by end of July will make interesting reading.

You can see Stonewall's accounts here:
register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-search/-/charity-details/3992465/accounts-and-annual-returns

Latest figures are for 2019 (details p.28 onwards).

They receive grants from the DfE, FCO, and Scottish and Welsh Governments. Total income from government sources in 2019 was £702,295.

About 250 Government departments and public bodies are members of Stonewall schemes. If they pay around £3,000 p.a. each for membership, this is around £750,000 p.a., plus any additional fees paid for extras such as 'training'. There is also income from state schools.

heathspeedwell · 23/05/2021 19:30

There's also the massive cost to taxpayers of all the hundreds of hours that staff in every single one of the publicly-funded companies have to spend on Stonewall training.

Even worse is the time needed for all the form-filling that has to be done to have a chance of becoming a Stonewall Champion.

It would take a lot of sleuthing to come up with a grand total for the money wasted on Stonewall every year but I really hope that somewhere there's a journalist who's prepared to attempt this feat!

This is my area of expertise (charity accounts/reviews), and I'm looking forward to a good read next month Grin

NiceGerbil · 23/05/2021 19:57

As a charity their income and sources and outgoings should be transparently published annually.

I've seen on Twitter that there's excitement for the first lgb alliance accounts to be published as they will show they are funded by right wing religious groups based in America Grin

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/05/2021 21:57

Thank you for the information

One of these organisations wants to undermine the Equality Act and has the support of MI5, MI6, GHCHQ, Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Defence Police, The Army, the govt, the police.

The other supports gay people and is accused of being funded by the Right....

NiceGerbil · 23/05/2021 22:19

The thing I find interesting is the absolute belief that it can't be lots of donations of various sizes from people - mainly women. They seem to assume that women who in their heads are a strange combination of right wing Christian types and angry feminists don't have access to money. That if a small amount is donated by a lot of people it becomes a large amount! They also seem to overlook the men who support various orgs like lgb alliance.

NiceGerbil · 23/05/2021 22:21

And of course all this religious right stuff has been imported wholesale from the states. Even though it doesn't make much sense at all over here...

Dominic Cummings for example is on the right in the UK. Is he, are people like him, likely to be throwing money at this???!!!

MiladyBerserko · 23/05/2021 22:54

Indeed. I have donated to quite few GC fundraisers this year. I previously had regular payments to Amnesty and party subs but as a women, those have become somewhat redundant.

What shall I spend my money on.....?

newnortherner111 · 24/05/2021 07:51

@MiladyBerserko a donation to a women's refuge that only accepts women?
