Scottish woman told would be charged for homophobic and transphobic tweets

On Wednesday April the 28th 2021 I received a call from a PC Laura Daley from police scotland requesting i attend an interview for homophobic and transphobic tweets under the milacious communications act.

I was asked to attend that coming Friday, she told me I had to attend East Kilbride police station so I could be then transported to Cathcart police station in a police car because I would have to go to a police station where there is holding cells, I would be then processed, questioned and then most likely charged.

I told her I would not be attending any interview on that day especially with it being a bank holiday weekend because my autistic twins needed me and I was scared I would be held all weekend.

To this she told me she would attend my house with social workers for my boys.

I contacted a solicitor straight away and he was unable to get PC Daley so for the first bank holiday in May I sent my disabled twins away for fear of this officer carrying out this threat.

This absolute nonsense has been hanging over my head for a month, I can barely sleep
or eat and I still don't know what the offending tweet is, my new interview has been scheduled for Thursday the 27th May, I will find out what I am supposed to have said at that point and if I will be indeed charged, again at another bank holiday, I just want to say, anyone who knows me, knows I am not homophobic or transphobic, I am a hard working mummy who would fight to the end for the safety and dignity of women and girls and for my vulnerable twinnies.

If we sit back and do nothing we will regret it for ever. For this reason I will never
Wheesht.

While the Ubermensch up north may well be getting off on terrorising women, its good to remember its outragious overreach like this that has/does and will continue to push the general population over those peaks.

Very helpful Legal Feminist thread with discussion about sections of it:

Scotland's Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) summary on social media prosecution policy:

copfs.gov.uk/media-site/latest-news-from-copfs/926-crown-office-sets-out-social-media-prosecution-policy

Interesting summary of how the legislation has been used in the past, covering a remarkably broad spectrum of behaviour from outright threats to juvenility.

Discussion in the comments about point 4 may be relevant.

Nana
There many be an innocuous explanation such as the ease of identifying who reported the tweet from the other tweets. I don’t think we should assume anything about the other tweets.

BraveBananaBadge · 04/06/2021 12:26

It did seem the first response was a standard reply to one Tweet that the uni hadn't seemed to realise was part of a thread. This is a good response. Much better than the usual 'thanks for letting us know about the horrible women random anonymous dude, we'll be blocking all the transphobes now'.

Johann Lamont (ex head of Scottish Labour, now sadly retired) tweets on the subject.

I think people are missing something about the ribbon tweet - it's posted with the location of where it was left, an address. This could be close to someone being targeted, it may imply stalking or 'I know where you live.' Just saying.

Chaz, this is true.

[quote SudokuMania]Brunel have issued a statement:

Perhaps they should have a word with their "Marxist" Society.

The statement from Brunel is excellent. Let’s hope other organisations follow their prompt and direct actions.

I hope you stretched before that massive reach.

What, exactly, do you think a bunch of feminist women would do?

I've never heard of River City, but the filming location is but a quick Google away:

Given that the ECHR has just comeout and said Gender Critical views are effectively protected speach, do people think part of this is the Scotish State trying to pick differences with Westminister?

I have always been a strong supporter of Scotish independance (if thats what they want obvs) but the sleazy one party state up there has really put me off this. SNP seem to have zero concernfor the people of Scotland.

PronounssheRa · 04/06/2021 13:07

That is a really strong statement.

I think all organisations need to examine why they act like pavolvs dogs as soon as the word trans is uttered. This was a PR horror for the uni, and has led to someone losing their job. All of which could have been avoided if the brain had been engaged before the tweet.

NecessaryScene · 04/06/2021 13:07

Leave ribbons everywhere. Again. And leaflets. Shudder.

Once there were shoes. Then they picked them all up again.

Monsters.

NecessaryScene · 04/06/2021 13:09

That is a really strong statement.

More to the point - it's a normal one. It's how you would expect an employer to react to that sort of thing in normal circumstances, absent some sort of "special dispensation for threats towards women" shield.

That feels like a marked disparity of treatment that is favouring one sex over the other.

Have you seen today's Times story about the informal resolutions/restitutions the Police are adopting with stalkers and harassers so that they don't get criminal records? This thread gives you a flavour of it.

twitter.com/thetimes/status/1400703105910587393

One woman's experience of death threats by email and the police response:

[Edited out the threats and abuse]
Police: maybe moderate your opinions and stop posting on this topic?

Along with "unless somebody says 'here is your address and I am coming to your house right now to kill you' we can't do anything."

I said, "what if they say 'here is your address and I am coming to kill you at some unspecified time?' Can you do something then?"

Coz I have had one of those.

And they said, nope, nothing we can do unless it's an immanent threat.

They wouldn't even record it.

I did wonder that too

I'm sick of everything being politicised

I still haven't stopped shaking after seeing those stickers.

The Brunel statement was good, hmmm looks like there is a real change going on.
I used to call myself a Marxist until relatively recently, I dont think I can articulate how childish they sound, even the blocking everyone, its like a toddler. Im actually embarressed for them.

Someone needs to explain material reality to them and how it is the bedrock of Marxism, Karl Marx to be cancelled in three, two...

titchy · 04/06/2021 13:15

Great response from Brunel! Good to see some unis prepared to publicly push back against the anti-women agenda.

The difference in treatment from the police between men and women is now so stark it obvious to everyone.

We are going to have to go to prison over this arn't we.

I dont want to, but I will if I have to.

Helen Joyce was saying this earlier today. I'm up for it.

"I think we women are going to have to start a new suffrage movement. We can’t be full citizens in a liberal democracy if we risk imprisonment for simply stating the truth of our bodily existence and demanding our legal rights."

And indeed it doesn't seem like she has been charged with anything like stalking. I was merely adding a reason more than 'the ribbon could look like a noose' as to why the police may have wanted to ask her about it.

Artichokeleaves · 04/06/2021 13:25

Those Marxist society tweets... looking forward to the day when there's no such thing as women's rights. How blatant does it need to get?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/06/2021 13:56

Is the misspelling of 'grammar' as 'grammer' deliberate in the picture that Screaming posted? It is very ironic indeed if it isn't and I've missed the joke if it is.
