Mayor of Bristol supports self ID (which wasn't in his manifesto)

From this article:

www.bristol247.com/opinion/your-say/im-proud-that-bristols-lgbtq-community-have-for-generations-enriched-the-life-of-our-city/

'We also want to make sure that transgender people in Bristol can access services in safety. I support the right to self identity, and we support the right for everyone to feel safe. '

What's he on about? Can mayors just come out with policy like that without any democratic process?

It's not in the LGBT section of his manifesto: votemarvin.uk/our-manifesto/

Looks like a panic reaction to loads of Green councillors getting elected including 18 year olds and nxn bxnxrx fxlx. I suspect most of the voters still think the Greens are actually an environmental party rather than purveyors of insane metaphysics...

Well self Id is fine if the second part of his statement " everyone to feel safe"

Includes women, even those who don't feel safe playing rugby with transwomen

Bristol is woke on seven and now a Labour green coalition so I’m disappointed as usual that someone who is an intelligent and able person supports this claptrap!

He can support it as much he wants though, it’s not the law

'I support the right to self identity, and we support the right for everyone to feel safe. '

But aren't those two aims contradictory? The right of males to self identify as women means that women will no longer feel (or be) safe.

Randomly it strikes me that I've never seen a headline that says something like 'single parents have enriched our city for generations'.

There's an oppressed group suffering entrenched disadvantages that never gets celebrated or elevated.

PaleGreenGhost · 21/05/2021 12:14

Excellent point notoast

I expect their first mistake was to largely be female. And then of course to be the regressive sort of females that still birth children. I've found that any identity I may have thought I once had has been pretty much ripped to shreds by the experience of being a mother (and I'm lucky to have a supportive partner).

There's so much critique of Labour doing ill-thought-out virtue signalling and how it turns voters off, and what's Rees' response... I guess deckchair rearranging is just too much fun.
This illustrates perfecly two problems they have - piling up votes in liberal cities, and the fact that if they want to go all in and play the virtue-signalling game the Greens will always outgun them and they'll lose from that end. Oh dear.

I just can't watch one more man just casually speak my rights away without even looking like he knows what he's talking about as he does it.

This is Bristol Labour, sadly. There is some disagreement and support for women's rights within the branches but very much of a minority. I will write to Marvin and ask him to commit to the existing provisions within the current law.

severnboring · 21/05/2021 17:44

Indeed Mujeres.

Which I why I will never vote for them - I'd have to be insane to vote for people who have stated that women like me shouldn't be allowed to earn a living, or even better should have a criminal record for believing in reality.

Who does he only see if from the POV of Hayley from Corrie?

Justhadathought · 22/05/2021 07:54

Yes, see the case of the ex mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson. also Labour party.

Justhadathought · 22/05/2021 07:57

Abuse we identified that LGBTQ+ people can often experience specific forms of abuse, such as the threat of having their sexuality or gender identity disclosed by a partner or family member

This passage makes clear he doesn't really understand what he is talking about.

People want their " true gender identity" exposed. I think he must mean not having references made to their sex.

Justhadathought · 22/05/2021 07:58

It is all straight out of the Stonewall playbook. He has followed a template.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 22/05/2021 08:11

Well the wheels are coming off that wagon though aren’t they?
