uk.yahoo.com/news/jessica-brennan-paedophile-jailed-harrogate-sexual-abuse-154130916.html.

I'm sorry, I know this is a subject that's been done to death but this headline about an "evil woman" is an example that needs mentioning I think.

My concern is the additional impact on the young victims of having to refer to the attacker as a woman/she to the police/in court/to their friends, etc.

So fucking sick of this #NotOurCrimes

An ‘evil’ woman has been jailed for 22 years for the sexual abuse of four young girls.

I think the quotes are in the wrong place Angry

OvaHere · 20/05/2021 09:45

Yes. Was just about to say the correct presentation would be Evil 'Woman'.

Although personally I would go with a simpler three letter word.

Bananarama100 · 20/05/2021 09:49

Pleased at least to see one of the victim's statements refer to what "this man" has done - glad she's been able to call the spade a spade, and glad it hasn't been changed for the reporting.

I remember reading that when David Challenor raped and tortured that 10 year old girl, part of his thrill came from wearing a dress and forcing her refer to him as female. (Mods, I'm not misgendering him, as far as I know David Challenor still identifies as male most of the time).

These four girls that Brennan abused may have been exposed to a similarly disturbing experience and it's shocking that the media is prioritising the perpetrator not the victims.

I just came here to post this.

It was obvious even from the tiny thumbnail pic that 'Jessica' was formerly known as 'Alan'.

"Evil woman". For fuck's sake. Hmm

I cant post a link but rip4xnutmeg pointed out on twitter that this case is one of three, biological men who identify as women that were tried for child sex offences in just one 24 hour period.

The media reporting in all three cases gives both male and female names so am I correct in thinking that they were all charged as males and only identified as females whilst awaiting trial?

The detail in the article that "Jessica Brennan, known as Allan Brennan when the offences were committed" did make me question exactly when 'Alan' decided that they would feel happier living as 'Jessica', and precisely what the motivation behind this major lifestyle change was.
ArabellaScott · 20/05/2021 10:22

This is why, when I try to discuss male violence, people say 'but women do it too'.

That's just insane.

This is misogyny in plain sight. It is a crime against women for men like this to be reported as and referred to in court as women. It is also a crime against free speech and all reason.

Our society is in dire, dire straits that this is the reality we live with now: that these lies are routinely accepted and acceptable, and are propagated by every single news outlet and the CJS itself.

That a handful of lobby groups who represent supposedly the “most marginalised, oppressed, vulnerable” people in the country actually had and have the the political clout and power to bring about changes as drastic and damaging to society as a whole, and especially to women and girls, with such ease as they did.

It is rotten to the core. If only women had the power and influence of these “vulnerable, marginalised” males; if only we were seen as being as human as they are. This would never have come about in the first place; or if it had, it would have been swiftly nipped in the bud and reversed.

Nic Williams at FPFW has taken this up with IPSO and has made some progress with individual publications but IPSO seems to be pretty intransigent on the whole. All that capture.

Surely if 'Jessica' was 'Allan' when the offences were committed, then they were committed by a man and should be reported and recorded as such.
If the reporter wants to also add (sunlight) that between offences and trial 'Allan' has become 'Jessica', then I would see that as a good bit of reporting

Angry

This makes me so darn cross it is unreal.

How DARE they. Why can't people see how damaging this is? It's crazy.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/05/2021 11:38

It's the ultimate fucking insult that victims of rape and sexual assault are forced in court to refer to their attackers (of an almost exclusively male crime) as 'she'.

They would find me in contempt first.
