Here is the policy document:

Do the unions have anything to say about this, I wonder?

I imagine they are captured too - otherwise they would be doing the FOI by FairPlay, bringing the JR etc. But no - unions - inc health, education etc are an utter disgrace on these issues.

Reading this has made me feel sick. Support humans indeed.

It's more important for male sex offenders to feel validated than it is for women to be or feel safe.

It does also beg the question of how difficult GRCs are to get. The whole 'humiliating process' of having to demonstrate you want to live your life as the opposite sex doesn't seem to be that onerous if sexually predatory men can get issued with one. And of course there is no way of repealing one.

It's just one women-hating fuck up after another.

happydappy2 · 16/05/2021 19:20

My understanding is that not every male bodied prisoner in Downview actually has a GRC, some are moved into general population, not even held on E Wing...MOJ have really made mistakes here...after Karen White sexually assaulted 2 female inmates they really should have learnt from their mistakes.

BlueLipstickRocks · 16/05/2021 19:23

I think it is important to note that this only refers to those with a GRC.

Given there have been 6000 issued in 15 years versus 600,000 who don't I fear this document is somewhat a diversion from the real issue.

Self ID are going onto female estate general population.

BlueLipstickRocks · 16/05/2021 19:24

Most will not.

Why are they in the female estate then? They're legally men.
happydappy2 · 16/05/2021 19:49

Clymene fair play for women have been doing great work trying to sort this out. They shouldn’t be in women’s prisons....no consideration was given to the very people the prison was provided for (Women)

Even with a GRC sex offender prisoners with male type dangly bits should not be housed with women OR post op TW. I can see real problems occuring with that.
BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 16/05/2021 21:43

that was an infuriating read. with the attitude displayed by those in authority towards women I kept having to remind myself that the document isn't 30 years old, it's 2 fucking years old.

Sexist fuckers

EyesOpening · 16/05/2021 22:18

"Staffing levels to be sufficient to enable the levels of supervision required"

What are they going to do if the levels of staffing fall below sufficient? Levels of female staff may fall if they realise they may have to strip search males

"At first the idea was that E-Wing would be for high-risk women in general (trans or not trans). This was so that high-risk trans prisoners didn’t feel singled out but ensuring they were treated no differently from high-risk women and therefore would ‘foster good relations’. However, it was soon realised that this could not work in practice."

Partly because there aren't really any "non trans" women in this category?

"There was no need for a specialist unit for high-risk transmen"

Partly because there aren't really any ?

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:25

Oh balls I keep losing long posts.

  1. Policy must be adhered to in settings like this. The wing is only for high risk offenders with a GRC. Suspect says that to reassure, implying all the in women's prisons have GRC. Which they don't. So what of those high risk prisoners? Massive gap in policy for better messaging?
NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:26
  1. ' In relation to fostering good relations between those with protected characteristics and those without, there is a risk that the relationships between the wider transgender population at HMP Downview and other women may be impacted uponby the creation of this unit within the community of HMP Downview. Specialist units within a prison can create tensions across the wider community, particularly given the needs being addressed by E Wing'

Sex is a protected characteristic. Telling oversight. Wtf.

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:30

I personally am aok with trans wings on either male or female estate. As long as separate. This is not.
Apparently it's important to have access to as much of the main stuff as possible.
So women will still be forced to mix with people who are high risk sex offenders who are tw.

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:33

The non high risk tw with or without GRC, and ? high risk without GRC (that needs immediate clarification) will still be in with the women.

That carries multiple risk to the others, full stop.

Note that none of the female inmates are high risk. None.

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:38

Essentially self id put the in the women's estate including sex offenders. With no public debate etc it was quiet.

Women were assaulted what a surprise.

Shit what do we do. Don't want more publicity. TWAW.

This is the result.

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:40

The risk of pregnancy is just sort of handwaved away. Very odd.

The document really goes on and on about having all the things that go on in the female estate that are not available in the male.

Why the difference? Because of the nature of the offences and the offenders in the two estates.

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:44

This document states that no current female inmates are high risk. There's a reason for that.

I'm also not at all sure that the things that help the female offenders (generally non violent, lots of acting for a man, history of abuse, sexual abuse etc) will be the best approach for the new wing. Shouldn't they have support etc specific to being trans?

NiceGerbil · 17/05/2021 03:46

In short. loads of points need explanations, clarification.

The overlooking sex as a protected characteristic, and the question around high risk offenders without a GRC are ones that need answering asap.

Fallingirl · 17/05/2021 05:29

Many female prisoners are all too familiar with abusive, coercive and controlling dynamics with abusive men. -The kinds of relationships where a woman tries to placate the man to avoid being further abused by him.

Now they are having that dynamic brought into the prison too. This will be frightening, re-traumatising and crippling, before we even get to any actual physical assaults.

Thecatonthemat · 17/05/2021 07:17

Is the Baroness and her group involved in getting this changed? I have written in the past to MP but he has stated publicly he has no problem with men in women’s prisons so see no support there. I wonder how the 500 new places in the women’s estate will be used. Was supposed to improve current facilities for women, but I have a gut feeling where the money will go. In light of recent court cases I really hope that the prisons department will be excluding any male prisoners with or without a GRC from any women’s prisons.

Tibtom · 17/05/2021 07:53

Wasn't there a book being given out to kids as part of a reading scheme training them up to be victims of coercive control: a wolf claiming to be a sheep and it was the sheep's responsibility to be nice to the wolf so it wouldn't eat them?
NecessaryScene1 · 17/05/2021 08:29

Brenda is a Sheep

HeadIsFucked · 17/05/2021 11:24

The 'they need to be with other women' excuse..erm..is the unit not full of 'other women' given of course TWAW? If we follow the same logic, that these are women like any other, then they are surely already in a unit full of 'women', thus contact with 'other women' is..not needed?

Don't be so... Logical. Logic is transphobic.
Tibtom · 17/05/2021 11:51

As is reason.
