Public consultation on conversion therapy

The government have announced a new consultation before implementing a ban on conversion therapy that attempts to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Does anyone know:
a) what is considered conversion therapy? Are there good and clear definitions? Would it include a safe space for professionals to apply a watch and wait approach, rather than no questions asked affirmation in children?

b) who is being consulted? If it is the public will a gender critical group provide us with a standard form we can all use?

@logsonlogsoff

I’m stunned they feel the need to publicly consult on this- just fecking ban it. It’s not ‘therapy’ to try to convince gay people that there’s something wrong with them and that they can choose to be straight and lead a ‘normal’ life. These conversion camps and courses are almost always run by religious nut jobs who want to ‘cure’ the gays. They’re incredibly damaging to the individuals who undergo this abuse.
That's not what the concern is. There is very little evidence LGB conversion therapy happens in the UK and of course it is abhorrent. It's about criminalising 'talking therapy' for children who may feel they are 'trans'.

All I want to add is that I feel like the village idiot. I found and “completed” this questionnaire a week or so ago.

Most of the questions kind of fried my brain. All of the answers I wanted to give were really conflicting and with huge caveats. I clearly need to do a lot more lurking and reading.

doctors, clinicians and experts have raised concerns that ought to shock anybody. www.telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness/body/right-blow-whistle-tavistock-clinic-puberty-blockers/

Press pause and wait for the Under 18’s - CASS NHS review. Dr Hilary Cass has been appointed to lead a review into young people, referral route and best practice. Over a 1/3 of clinicians at GIDS thought homophobia underlied transtition and the majority of the patients are LGB (GIDS data on sexuality). And the data shows social contatgion underlies ROGD cluster groups (Brighton School)

Our MPs and the government could be sleepwalking into the biggest medical scandal in history. Mike Freer needs to wake up.

FindTheTruth · 06/12/2021 07:03

the principal cause of modern gay conversion practices is the embrace of gender identity ideology which medicalises gender non-conforming young people, many of whom are LGB

lesbians are disproportionately affected by conversion driven by rapid onset gender dysphoria, as their overrepresentation in patient cohort data from the Tavistock GIDS service shows

I tune in to Parliament channel and if its interesting, I stay a while. Yesterday there was a re-run of the Women and Equalities Committe on COnversion therapy. Unfortunately I couldn't stay and listen but the government minister was talking about parents discussing things with their children and it seemed that the legislation will have regard for intent and that the threshold would be pretty high for prosecution That bit smacked of cover up, I don't think they wanted to say that the threshold would be high, because if it is, how would you ever prosecute - maybe smoke and mirrors legislation to seem like you're doing something when you're not).

I don't know if this is a good link but I'm posting it anyway and will come back to watch later www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00131zd

That's really not acceptable. Under 18s need bullet-proof protection and complete freedom to explore. This is absolutely not a safe area, knowing what's happening in schools, society at large, and the court ruling that puberty blockers may be prescribed for under 16s without parental consent.

Has anyone had any problems with filling in the consultation form?

When I get to the question: The government considers that delivering talking conversion therapy with the intention of changing a person’s sexual orientation or changing them from being transgender or to being transgender either to someone who is under 18, or to someone who is 18 or over and who has not consented or lacks the capacity to do so should be considered a criminal offence. The consultation document describes proposals to introduce new criminal law that will capture this. How far do you agree or disagree with this? I don't get a text box to fill in.

This seems to be the most important question to answer so I want to give a written response. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hello - Sex Matters are providing a response form where you can focus on responding to the two main questions of interest (potentially) - the second being the one you quote and are having an issue with:

Here: sex-matters.org/take-action/conversion-therapy-consultation/?mc_cid=b4d9c4b6e9&mc_eid=571734ba60

You can complete the shortened and focussed response through them.

I’ve just done mine in this way, and wrote about 3 pages for my response to that very question!!

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/12/2021 14:20

@GrandmaMazur When you click the link, there are two options - Full response and Quick response.
Simply scroll down to complete the quick response, which includes the specific question you want to answer, I believe, if that would be more straightforward and sufficient for how you want to respond.

Brilliant - thank you!

@GrandmaMazur As a very concerned parent - thank you! - for taking the time to respond to the consultation x

Here's a link to LGB Alliance's views/recommendations. lgballiance.org.uk/2021/11/30/lgb-alliances-response-to-the-government-consultation-on-banning-conversion-therapy/

I found it quite helpful.

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/12/2021 14:59

@Wheresthebeach Yes, I thought their response, with data, was very good. I also support the conclusion that gender ideology must be separated from sexuality, and looked into far more carefully.

Yes exactly. Of course everyone is against 'bible bashing gay conversion', but the trans issue needs talk therapy and that may be banned.

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/12/2021 21:05

Incase anyone’s not aware of what this is about and what we’re up against:
pitt.substack.com/p/a-trans-estrangement?justPublished=true

And if you think it couldn’t happen here - look at the bill, look at the court ruling that puberty blockers may be prescribed for under 16s without parental consent, in the UK. Ask your kids in secondary school about the culture in school.

Find out. Take the red pill, before it’s too late. Please.

Watched this yesterday. Was underwhelmed by Mike Freer Eq Minister, I think he's out of his depth. When asked about how the new law would be communicated to organisations and individuals. He muttered something about organisations doing it themselves eg the police. Can just imagine guidance on the law delivered by College of Policing.

Alex Phillips on GB News did a programme centred on the Conversion Therapy Consultation today . Sinead Watson was interviewed .
