I'd be interested to see what the numbers are compared to non pandemic times. Are they genuinely higher or are they just emerging more in the news stories as less will be happening on both local and international levels.

There may be a number of reasons on the other hand for increased crime. Increased opportunity because freed up schedules. Increased motivation because more time to explore the dark side of the web. Increased social isolation and time spent online twisting 'normal' interaction.

Like everything, I think there are many hidden victims of the pandemic.

That is very upsetting.

I’m pretty sure that women killed by their partner’s increased from 2 a week to 3 a week during the first lockdown.

Neither figure is acceptable.

There have now been 23 women murdered in the UK by men in the last 10 weeks. This thread lists 21 women and other posters have added the most recent two, including the victim mentioned in the OP - Maria Jane Rawlings.

One of the women in that thread I linked to, Egle Vengaliene, was murdered about 15 miles away from where I live. There was one mention of the murder in a local newspaper (“woman’s body found, man arrested”) and no further follow ups - nothing on the local tv news, nothing I could find on the BBC website for several days. I had to search extensively over the next few days just to find her name and further details - I know several women of a similar age who live in the small town she was found in and wanted to find out if it was someone I knew.

My point is that the murder of women is so commonplace as to be unremarkable to the media.

What are the numbers?

I just saw this. The footage on the DM showing the attacker grabbing her and forcing her towards the bushes is horrifying! Poor woman is in shock and unable to react. It should be the top story but it's halfway down the page.

She was a young grandmother with lots of life to live and spend with her young GH and family. They will now miss out on that time.

I hope the family get the support they will need.

Just seen they have arrested someone for Julia’s murder.
