Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Who here would have voted for Sadiq as London Mayor if he supported single sex spaces for Londoners?

I certainly would, and would have really liked to vote for him but just couldn’t do it given how he has approached this issue - ie avoided even discussing the impact on women.

It’s looking close very surprisingly between him and the Tory candidate,

I’m not in London (although I work there) but I wouldn’t have voted for Khan. If a politician can’t define a woman as an adult human female they won’t get my vote. TWAW is an opinion, not a fact. The FACT is that a transwoman will never: give birth, have birth related injuries, have a career affected by time out due to miscarriages, pregnancy or birth, go through the menopause. Distorting the sex based rights of women and policies designed to redress imbalances by putting men in the same category as women is unfair, exclusive of women and regressive. I’m a single issue voter now. I will only vote for the party or candidate who defines women correctly and recognises that any conflicts with other protected categories need considered scrutiny to ensure that women don’t suffer one iota as a result. Why on earth would I vote for a politician who gives my rights away?

persistentwoman · 08/05/2021 08:54

If a politician doesn't believe in reality, they don't get my vote. If a politician doesn't support women's rights, they don't get my vote. If a politician thinks that being a woman is a costume or an idea in a male human's head, they don't get my vote. If a politician chants mantras that they don't understand, they don't get my vote. If a politician pretends not to understand what sex is, and muddles it with "gender", they don't get my vote. If a politician demonstrates that ideology is more important than what's true and what's right, they don't get my vote. If I can see that a politician would be prepared to say 2+2=5 if it suited them politically, they don't get my vote. If they're prepared to do all of the above, what else might they be prepared to sacrifice to win votes?

That's such a good comment SmallPug

NefretForth · 08/05/2021 08:59

An impressive number of us seem to have gone with Binface!

Lavera9 · 08/05/2021 08:59

Have I missed something? Why the distain for those who voted Green?

I voted BinFace, then Khan. BinFace’s policies made sense to me Grin

NefretForth · 08/05/2021 09:00

And brilliant comment, @SmallPug - I agree with every word.

Lavera9 · 08/05/2021 09:03

@Boohooyouho

I voted for Khan regardless. As a household where the two adults work for tfl we are terrified of bailey getting in. His entire campaign seemed to be look how bad Khan is. Not, this is what I’ll do.
I felt the same! He ran a campaign that was negative and full of fear-mongering and slandering. I can’t remember a single one of his policies!

Put me off. But clearly didn’t put enough people off considering the vote counts so far Hmm

Bloody well said.

Agreed.

I voted for Count Binface as a protest vote. I had a look at all the candidates and was not impressed. I used my second place vote for Mandu Reid. I know the WEP are not GC, but they were the only party even mentioning women's rights as a major issue.

I did vote Green for the constituency vote as our local candidate is a woman who is campaigning on Green issues for very personal reasons Sad. I want to be able to vote Green. I believe strongly in the importance of environmental issues. However, I'm very bothered by a party that asks us all to listen to the science and then tells us that biological sex is a spectrum, doesn't really matter etc etc. So I only do it when I like the look of the candidate, and tbh it would be different if I thought they were in with a chance of winning, which they aren't round here. Labour could put up Attila the Hun and he'd win in this constituency.

My list vote also went to the WEP, for the reasons above.

Mayoral result could be later today, but no earlier.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/c27kz1m3j9mt/london-elections-2021 Results of Mayoral election on BBC news page here. First preferences only counted so far. Closer than I was expecting between Khan and Bailey. Green lying third.

NefretForth · 08/05/2021 09:03

The Greens describe women as “non-men”, @Lavera9. They don’t think we’re proper people at all. It’s a great shame because I would actually vote for an environmentally focused party if it were only properly connected with reality and didn’t despise my sex.

Cyberworrier · 08/05/2021 09:07

I would have. Went SDP and rejoin EU, despite their opposing views on Brexit. And communist party for assembly!

UpTheJunktion · 08/05/2021 09:11

Khan has disappointed me on Women’s Rights, LTNs, having flopped around meekly while Johnson waged war on London’s infrastructure to make political capital, failure to protect bus drivers early in the pandemic, and many other issues.

But none of it makes it worth risking a Tory mayor.

MiddlesexGirl · 08/05/2021 09:12

Having the media in their pocket mustn't harm, either

Print media yes. But other types - emphatically no. Where is most of the influencing done these days? On social media which they most certainly do not have in their pockets.

I looked it up and they had invited “women and non men” - ie: women and transwomen - to join something. That’s not the same as describing women as “non men”. She seemed to be describing TRANSwomen as “non men”, which seems fair to me... as they’re transwomen, they’re not men.

Did I miss something there? I only looked it up quickly.

MiddlesexGirl · 08/05/2021 09:13

I too could be persuaded to vote Green if they dropped the anti-women agenda

Needmoresleep · 08/05/2021 09:15

Sort of yes.

Khan's inability to raise his hear above the parapet and define a woman was indicative of his general amoeba-like persona. He says the "right" things but It is hard to know what he stands for.

I would like to see a leader with a bit of courage and personality. A lot of London issues are neither left, nor right. Amongst the drab list of candidates there was no one who seemed qualified to represent London.

Does anyone know why Rory did not stand? He sounded interesting. I loved the way he went to stay with random Londoners who invited him.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 09:22

Rory is out in the states - teaching I think. He would have been a good choice I think.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 08/05/2021 09:23

The greens elected transwoman Kathryn Bristow as co chair of its woman’s group. Bristows first action was to wage a hate campaign against their co chair, a biological woman for being transphobic

No party that has a man chairing it’s women’s group will get my vote

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 08/05/2021 09:29

@Lavera9 yes, you missed something. The greens voted against women’s sex—based rights at the recent conference. And then they used underhand shenanigans to dispose of Emma Bateman, pro sex-based rights and co-chair of Green Party Women. I didn’t vote green for the first time in thirty years.

Lavera9 · 08/05/2021 09:34

I did some more quick reading. Wow. What a mess for the Greens.

Jeez, it’s such a depressing political climate. How on earth are things ever going to get better?

IdblowJonSnow · 08/05/2021 09:57

@Blibbyblobby

I really liked your post.

Alternista · 08/05/2021 10:01

Not in London but this issue is now the deciding factor for me every time I vote.
Any candidate who will not uphold and protect the rights of adult human biological females to own, embody and be protected by the word woman will never, ever get my vote again.

LazyHorizon · 08/05/2021 17:27

Fantastic post SmallPug

Just allowing myself to imagine that everyone put Binface as 1st choice and he romps home to take the job Grin

Cwenthryth · 08/05/2021 19:28

It’s looking like 40% Khan 35% Bailey on the first choice votes, with a few constituencies just a few % of votes left to verify.

So it’ll come down to the second choice votes but Khan will most likely get in.

For reference in 2016 Khan got 44% on the first round and Goldsmith 35%

So possibly the Tory vote is about the same, but people have deserted Labour for Count Binface? Grin

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 23:06

Great. Marvellous. A man who will merrily turn his back on woman’s rights has been rewarded with another term.

How can we trust this man - he now knows that he could confidently say that the Queen is indeed a large lizard, women are actually a type of shrub, and the moon is green cheese - and he will still be rewarded with votes.
