Just read an article in the Times about the pay gap for black female barristers. I was amazed how taken aback I was that there was not a single gender reference. I am so used to ruffling at gender being misused that I was slightly taken aback. Sorry I don't have a share token but here's the link

The second note is how much worse it is for black women in terms of pay and progress. It's down to superficial equality where they focus on numbers and then find they are still discriminating against women

It's a true example of intersectional discrimination, isn't it.

I don't usually read the Law section, while I'm there, this article may also be of interest (note 'safe space' appropriately means 'no tolerance of sexual misconduct' in this, not whatever it now means to students)

from OP article,
"Black female barristers earn an average of almost £19,000 a year less than their white male colleagues, figures have revealed, reigniting claims of racism and sexism in the profession."

It remains a very middle class white male profession, no doubt that sexist and racist atitudes are entrenched with many who hold influence.

ArabellaScott · 06/05/2021 09:45

I'm glad these issues are being talked about. Especially in the field of law.

OhHolyJesus · 06/05/2021 10:05

Thanks for this OP and the share token.

19k less. This is beyond a joke.

It would be interesting to hear from legal professionals. If this is a fair comparison being made between those who have a similar level of experience and years working in law, then this is discrimination.

There is one particular lawyer I'd like to hear from.

Off to read in full.

I was shocked at 19k but had assumed parity of experience; in fact junior white men are the comparator Shock
"The figures showed that on average black female barristers earn £18,700 less a year than junior white men in the profession."

I'm speechless

Haven't read the piece yet but it may still be referring to parity of experience - unless I'm mistaken "junior" barrister just means a barrister who isn't a QC.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 06/05/2021 10:59

I read it as comparing the average earnings of all black female barristers to the average of white male juniors ("The report defines an average junior white male barrister as one who had been in practice for between 13 to 17 years but who was not a QC.")

FightingTheFoo · 06/05/2021 11:18

It's badly written but they are talking about parity of experience - theyre just using "junior" and "barrister" interchangeably because at the Bar they mean the same thing.

So they are comparing Black female juniors (barristers) with white male juniors (barristers).

They're not talking about Black female QCs. Possibly because there aren't many/any? (No idea)

But that's why in the fourth para they make the point that white male QCs earn even more than Black female barristers (juniors):

"White male QCs were found to earn on average £57,400 more than the average earnings mark, creating an average gap between them and black female barristers of more than £76,000."

Ahh thank you FightingTheFoo
