London Mayor: Khan vs Bailey

Ok, so I know most of ‘us’ are probably going to vote for Count Binface as our first choice because the whole mayoral candidate field is just so, so dismal (few notable exceptions but not realistic prospects), and there are other threads to discuss different options. I want to ask one specific question here.

Realistically either we’ll get Khan again, or Bailey. So - women of FWR - generally a naturally left leaning bunch but perpetually frustrated by so-called “progressive” parties reifying gender identity over the reality of biological sex - if you had to, if you had to, gun to your head/they’ve got your puppy held hostage and won’t release her until you answer, if you had to vote either Khan or Bailey, and you know your vote is the deciding factor, and who you vote for will definitely be the mayor for the next four years...which one? Neither is not an option, the puppy gets it.

And if Bailey (and you’re not a natural Tory) how do you feel about that?

For full disclosure am wavering over my second choice vote!

Neither. They both support the silvertown tunnel which will massively increase congestion. Khan is full on TWAW and I haven't seen anything definitive from bailey on that line. But his manifesto does not add up: www.fromthemurkydepths.co.uk/2021/04/19/shaun-bailey-releases-manifesto-for-london-mayor-lets-take-a-took/

PenguindreamsofDraco · 03/05/2021 19:26

At this stage I reckon Rory S could re enter the race and storm to victory. I'd have voted for him in a heartbeat.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcoln · 03/05/2021 19:28

YY! I really really miss Rory Stewart!

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 20:27

I think I’d have campaigned actively for Rory Stewart if it wasn’t for bloody covid meaning he felt he couldn’t continue his campaign.

BlackLamb Neither is not an option (for the premise of my OP on this thread)!!! Unless you actually are willing to sacrifice the puppy to stop the Silvertown Tunnel 🤔😝

Khan is arrogant and has neglected to address the knife crime problems we have in our borough. He gives not one shit (despite what he says in his manifesto). As for women's issues...(squints to see anything on his website) fuck all. He jumped on the bandwagon of women's personal safety for a while following Sarah Everard's murder, but has failed to say how he is going to root out the abusers currently in the Met. In fact, apart from a few buzzwords, he's been silent on what he will actually do to make our streets safer for everyone. I compare him in Napoleon, the little man who is power hungry and an absolute arsehole. If he mentions he's the son of a bus driver ONE MORE TIME...

Bailey is a wankpuffin of the highest order. He denigrates women, especially those who needs extra help. He actually said he'd help homeless people by asking them to save only £5k to get on the property ladder. You've run from an abuser, you have kids in tow, you're on UC...how the fuck can you find £5k for a flat? If he mentions he was a youth worker for 20 years ONE MORE TIME...

I know the WEP are not very popular with all Mn users but I voted for Mandu Reid because she seems to have balls, if you pardon the expression. A bit gobby, and I like that. I gave my second choice to Binface because why not? This election is a farce anyway.

AfternoonToffee · 03/05/2021 20:50

I was getting very confused and thought it was Rebecca Long-Bailey that was being talked about and wondering what was going on. A different Bailey makes a lot more sense. However who is BinFace?

Do you have to put a 2nd? I'm not planning on my elections oop north.

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 20:58

Just to be clear, the premise of the thread is - I know both options are pretty shit - but IF YOU HAD TO (or the puppy gets it) either Bailey or Khan, no other choice, neither is not an option.

(Btw, WEP don’t actually really want you to vote for Mandu. They want your list vote for the GLA and are hoping to get their candidate Harini Iyengar onto the GLA, they genuinely believe that is possible).

You don’t have to put a 2nd choice, but it gives you the option of having an actual say between the top two candidates, if your first choice candidate is a no-hoper (electorally speaking, not a value judgement!)

@VladmirsPoutine

Bailey seems to me an interesting notion. He is not at all supported by his tory colleagues and is very much trying if I'd add too hard to be like them. Nothing about him is tory and I don't think the tories at large really give too many fucks currently about the London mayoral elections. Ultimately Khan will win - of course Labour need to do so much more not least for affordable housing in London. But I suspect the competition may as well have been Khan versus an empty skittles wrapper.
My husband and I (we live together) both had a letter from Rishi Sunak asking us to vote for Bailey.
PeterPomegranate · 03/05/2021 21:13

I’ll be voting for Khan. I think he’s better than Bailey. I do agree that the field is dire though. So many candidates and so few good choices.

I really, really dislike dogs so personally yes I would sacrifice the puppy to stop the tunnel (sorry to the dog lovers)! However in practical measures, as all the main candidates seam to be TWAW there is nothing to distinguish them there so that means voting on local issues, and as I live about 10 meters away from the A2 that means holding my nose and voting for the anti-tunnel candidates even though they are TWAW..... I know not voting for either Khan or Bailey as second preference is basically a wasted vote, but Khan is a shoo-in anyway (in part because of Bailey's dismal campaign) so in a sense it doesn't matter.
Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 21:43

Fair enough!

How fucking depressing is it, that intelligent, politically engaged women find that choosing who to vote for in this election basically doesn’t matter. U.K. politics is fucking broken.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Thank you. I might not touching on feminist issues here, so didn

What really gets my goat now is the promise to abolish the weekend cognition charge presented as something he will do for London after he himself introduced it. It's sheer demagoguing the issue, the way he did with the fare freeze.

Where are the trees he promised? Ha!

He also promised to scrap the % of the GLC tax were still paying every year for the fucking 2012 Olympics.

Has he abolished it? No.

Bailey for me.

Twistiesandshout · 03/05/2021 23:14

Bailey. Khan is diabolical.

OhWhyNot · 04/05/2021 00:06

I’m not sure who I shall vote for but I haven’t been impressed by Khan in the last five years. Bailey’s background I find interesting I know people who have worked with him and give glowing reports of him but his agenda seems too simplistic

For once I cba to vote which I’m disappointed in myself for feeling this way

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 04/05/2021 09:33

One thing I’m really fed up is with trying to find the lesser evil to vote for.

Why can’t we have good candidates to choose from instead of working out who we don’t want?
