Actually jaw dropped at this.

I'm not going to vote for them, because I no longer want independence, but it's bloody amazing to see women's rights and needs set out so clearly.

Bloody hell. Goosebumps.

If nothing else it shifts the Overton window a bit maybe.

If I was in Scotland I'm not sure I wouldn't be swung by that. I know there are plenty of reasons not to vote for them but wow. Someone said it.

Good luck to Scottish women next week. However bleak it's not the end.

transsloth · 02/05/2021 10:31

Fantastic! It's good to see it clearly.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 10:31

Yes, for sure. It's laying out clearly and calmly what women want and need. It's not bigotry, it's not transphobia, it's not over the top. It's quite simple, logical and reasonable, and anyone can see that.

Compare and contrast with the Rainbow Greens' candidates, for example.

It also provides a glimmer of comfort that if (and when, polls predict a big SNP win) the SNP take control again we won't all be automatically burned at the stake.

I’m really impressed with the summation by Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh; how it was written and how she delivered it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/05/2021 10:37

Brilliant. I so admire their guts and I am now scared they will face reprisals.

YouSetTheTone · 02/05/2021 10:43

God it’s so good to see women calmly stating that we have THE RIGHT to single sex spaces and our existing protections. We do! We have the RIGHT to those things. Nearly cried watching that. I also appreciated that there were subtitles on that.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 10:45

Reprisals? Dear lord, surely not!

Scotland got over the witch hunts some time ago, no?

Great. I was going to give Alba my list vote for this reason, but this has cemented my view.
Still don't have a clue who my main vote will go to. I am pro independence but I cannot stomach voting for the SNP because of their attitude to women.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/05/2021 10:53

Fantastic, wish I could vote for them! Why are the women in English politics so afraid to stand up and say this simple message? It’s pathetic.

I was thinking of voting Wightman. I'd really like to. But it'll have to be Alba after seeing that.

I'm apoplectic that I have to set everything else aside to focus purely on defending the existing rights of women. This is 2021

Changemusthappen · 02/05/2021 10:59

All women should watch this, bumpity bump....

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/05/2021 11:02

What brave and determined women. Fantastic video.

Yes, indeed. Fighting for our most basic rights of all - the rights to name ourselves, define ourselves, and uphold existing law.

It's hardly revolutionary, yet ...

Reported my post in case there was too much personal information in there!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 02/05/2021 11:16

Brilliant!
I dearly wish I could vote for them but I don’t want my vote used as a “mandate” for another bloody referendum.
Bit jarring to see vote SNP first vote - I understand why but the SNP are so very opposed to women having even the right to name ourselves Angry

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 11:25

Well, the pro-indy parties want indie above all else, remember.

Yes of course, I understand that’s their priority but still jarred Smile
persistentwoman · 02/05/2021 11:41

Fantastic video. Yet chilling that this is something that the Labour party, Lib Dems and Greens would not support . Fuckwits.

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 11:51

Hmmm. I get your appreciation of the issues being named out loud but the ‘only us’ comment - feels like a cynical attempt to move into a space they know the snp have boldly left vacant. Just feels all a bit ironic when their leader has been accused by several women of breaching their sex based rights. What do these women in the film think of that? I know he wasn’t convicted but I personally think the sleaze oozes out of him, and if he/the party genuinely cared about equality and women’s rights, then why didn’t they choose a woman as leader?

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 12:04

The 'only us' comment is completely accurate, unfortunately. Unless there's another party in Scotland standing up unequivocally for women's rights? I haven't seen one so far. Would be nice, of course.

I'm no great fan of Salmond, based on his political history (handing an SSSI to Donald Trump for a golf course, in particular). WRT sexual harassment - he was acquitted of all charges, despite the best efforts of some very powerful people.

ALBAs primary concern is independence, women's rights is not the overarching founding principle.

Anyway, I'm not voting for them - just amazed at the forthright video!

OP posts:
3peassuit · 02/05/2021 12:11

Wow. Labour should take note if it wants to win this woman back.

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 12:12

I know it’s true Arabella, but just the way it was said - I can imagine them all behind the scenes saying ‘so what have we got that the SNP doesnt?’ It just feels cynical to me and I don’t believe that women’s sex based rights are a major priority for this party. If it helps get the ideas in to more people’s minds though, that’s a positive I guess.

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 12:13

Agree, if a party I trusted popped up with this agenda then I’d be delighted!
