Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been given another year for 'propaganda against the regime' - supposedly she attended a rally in London 12 years ago.

Why has the regime got it in for her so very badly? What is there to gain? My heart is aching for poor Gabrielle.

I hadn’t seen this until I came on MN and now I feel sickened - by Iran and our own government. Obviously Iran are being despicable, but I remember listening toa podcast a few years ago about the debt we owe Iran and it was pretty clear that the U.K. are just being straight up wankers about it. If we didn’t consistently have terrible human beings in control of our country, it’s entirely likely this wouldn’t have happened. I wish there was some way the family could sue the British government for damages.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 26/04/2021 18:33

My heart breaks for her and I just pray she has the continued strength to survive this.

MissyB1 · 26/04/2021 18:35

As a Country we need to be pressuring our Government to pay their bloody debt and get this woman home. It’s obvious she’s a hostage but we do actually owe the money - so it just needs to be bloody paid.

flowerycurtain · 26/04/2021 18:38

This is such awful news.

How can we put pressure on our govt to act?

PicsInRed · 26/04/2021 18:43

Jesus wept, just give them their fucking money Boris.

Marcipex · 26/04/2021 18:46

Bloody bloody awful.

stumbledin · 26/04/2021 19:21

As others have said it is just part of how far down the scale UK politics has slid that we haven't paid back the money we owe to Iran and that we are happy to let not just Nazanin but others be a pawn in this stupid dick waving contest. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41974185

StillFemale · 26/04/2021 20:28

So disappointed that UN are not putting on pressure and of course with the UK government. The life of a woman doesnt seem to matter very much

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 27/04/2021 08:47

That poor woman.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/04/2021 12:27

This is indeed awful Flowers

If anyone was shocked or outraged by my post on page 1, thinking that I am taking Iran's side on this, I worry every time my wife goes back to Iran to see her 93 year old mum.
The relationship between the UK and Iran is historic and toxic, going back to 1917 - 1919 when the Persian famine which killed between 8-10 million people was blamed on the British administration. At that time Iran was occupied by the forces of Britain, Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
There was another famine in 1942/43 when Iran, a neutral country, was occupied by British and Russian forces.
In 1953, the UK/US.

Then in 1953 Churchill and US intelligence ordered "Operation Ajax" the coup which removed the democratically elected PM Mossadeq and replaced him with the Shah.

Then in 1978/79, we encouraged the Shah to flee Iran, so that we could put a temporary government of "friendly ayatollahs" in charge, and then replace them with the Shah's son.

It's awful. That poor woman and her family. I keep thinking she should make a run for it, anything to get home, but if it was that easy then she would have done it already.

AssassinatedBeauty · 27/04/2021 13:15

An academic, Kameel Ahmady, escaped across the border recently on foot and alone, but there's no way that Nazanin is well enough or strong enough for that. Plus she is being monitored and watched. I would also think that there would be extreme concern for her parents wellbeing if she did manage to escape the country.

I don't think there is any chance that Johnson will agree to paying the owed money back to Iran, unfortunately.

KarenMarlow3 · 27/04/2021 13:24

It is cruel beyond belief that Nazanin has been sentenced to a further year on another trumped up charge. If she is ever released, she will need years of counselling to help her to deal with what she has been through. I just hope she has the mental and physical strength to cope. Poor family.

newnortherner111 · 27/04/2021 17:39

Awful.

Don't forget that when Foreign Secretary, how Mr Johnson paid so little attention to her situation that he could be bothered to know the charge against her by the Iranian regime.

BodyMovin · 27/04/2021 21:49

Oh gosh the picture in the BBC article of her daughter's home made calendar counting the days until the release that didn't happen has broken me. This is beyond bad.
