I thought this deserved another go at a thread. In the spirit of FWR this is a celebratory thread. Congratulations Dr Cathryn Edwards

Dr Cathryn Edwards, consultant physician and gastroenterologist who joined Torbay Hospital in 2002 has today been announced as the first female registrar for the Royal College of Physicians – the first woman to hold the post in over 500 years.

The role of registrar at the Royal College of Physicians is a key leadership position and one of national importance in healthcare.

This is not the first time that Dr Edwards has been a trailblazer in terms of gender equality in medicine, having been the first female secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology and its second only female president.

Dr Edwards said: “I am delighted and honoured to be accepting the role of registrar at the Royal College of Physicians. I look forward to working with members and Fellows throughout the regions, to shape the identity and skills of our future physician community.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues across Torbay and South Devon for their unstinting support and encouragement.”

Liz Davenport, Chief Executive, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are extremely proud of Cathryn’s appointment to this auspicious position. She has been a part of our Torbay and South Devon family for nearly twenty years and is a much-valued colleague and clinical leader.

“On a personal note, it is also heartening to see our commitment to equality of opportunity exemplified in Cathryn’s achievements.”

Congratulations to Dr Edwards. This is great news for all females in that field.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/04/2021 16:07

Well done! Such an achievement for a woman in a field of practice that can be very male-biased and sexist!

Let's hope that it is part of broader moves by females to equality!

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/04/2021 16:12

Congrats to Dr Edwards Smile

OhHolyJesus · 26/04/2021 16:30

The first in over 500 years, wow!

Clearly a trailblazer based in her other achievements as well.

Congratulations Dr Edwards (I hope she sees this)!

Shizuku · 26/04/2021 16:39

Excellent news. Congratulations to Dr Edwards.

Dr Cathryn Edwards is a superb choice for this important role with RCP.

RCP is a valued contributor to the evidence review process of many other healthcare organisations, including NICE, and the Registrar is the leader and figurehead for that.

Many, many huzzahs for this appointment.

Brava! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Well done to Dr Edwards. Thanks

Is Dr Edwards the first ever woman or was there another woman 500 years ago who held this role?

Thelnebriati · 26/04/2021 17:25

Women couldn't graduate until 1909, so she's the first.

So heartening to see this, especially in the light of what Dr Edwards said about 'shaping the identity and skills of our future physician community.'

As Caroline Criado-Perez has highlighted, women have been sidelined in medical care and research and the issues and conditions specific to female bodies are not given the same priority as the default male body, so this is really fantastic news. Congratulations Dr Cathryn Edwards!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/04/2021 12:38

It is wonderful to see this. This thread really does deserve a bump! (That would be away cool pun if she was an obstetrician eh)?

Wow. That's awfully recent.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 27/04/2021 13:26

Wow. That's awfully recent.

Women couldn't be FRS until comparatively recently…one of the early reasons being that married women couldn't belong because they had no status under the law.

It would be interesting to have a thread listing the dates women were allowed to do a thing such as join a guild, apply for a credit card, inherit property, run a business, or compete in a sport.

It would! I think sometimes I forget just how recent most of our rights are.
