Sorry, can't watch but I kind of hear you. I'm still furious about the toilets.

How are these people selected? Surely there should be stakeholders from all sides involved.

MnaWomanIreland · 24/04/2021 12:11

They were a cross section of society. However I think it was a lost cause when the terms of reference, which were laid out by the Seanad, were changed at the first chance.
The actual recommendations seem pretty sensible: www.citizensassembly.ie/en/news-publications/press-releases/recommendations-of-the-citizens-assembly-on-gender-equality.html
The recommendations regarding gender equality are meaningless as gender is based on feelings.
They would be good if they specified sex.
I wonder if the people on the assembly were aware of the difference between sex and gender.

Just had a quick read there.

Recommendation: Article 40.1 of the Constitution should be amended to refer explicitly to gender equality and non-discrimination.

No...sex discrimination. grrr. At least any constitutional change would need a referendum, them maybe this would get sunlight.

Also - can someone please explain these:

By the end of 2022 extend gender quotas for party candidates to local, Seanad and European Elections, increase penalties for parties that don’t meet the quota and increase the threshold from 30% to 40% for both women and men.

Make public funding to cultural, sports, arts and media organisations contingent on a quota of 30% representation of women, and of men, on their Governing bodies by 2025 and 40% by 2030.

The wording is really weird...How do you increase the quota of both men and women? Surely increasing the quota of one would reduce the quota of another. Or am I missing something?

Is the 30% the minimum amount of women or men eg,. the balance cannot be 80% men /20% women or vice versa? To be increased to a minimum of 40% women by 2030? The wording is difficult to understand. 30% seems very low but currently only 22% of the TD's in Dail Eireann are women.
