Its gender is not yet known, according to the BBC.

I JUST came on to post that as well!

Biggest eyeroll ever seen from me.

Beowulfa · 22/04/2021 10:35

People who work with livestock must get terribly confused about the gender identity/expression of their animals. There is literally no obvious way to divide groups to ensure you don't get unwanted pregnancies.

JellySlice · 22/04/2021 10:39

Oh how embarrassing to talk about the sex of an animal! Oh they couldn't possibly do that!

SuperSange · 22/04/2021 10:40

My husband works with Mouse deer, but not at the location. He says they're difficult to sex straight after birth, as are a lot of animals, but has no idea about their gender identity. Wink

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 22/04/2021 11:27

Hang on, is it a deer or is it a mouse? The poor baby's chances of understanding the English language are not looking good, right from the start.

NutellaEllaElla · 22/04/2021 11:30

I think it's more important to know if it identifies as a deer or a mouse.

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 22/04/2021 11:33

Farmers are coming around to the idea of gender identity. Get a dairy bull calf to identify as a heifer and it solves a lot of things..

Not sure the milk would be very palatable though.

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2021 11:34

It doesn’t have a bloody gender, it has a SEX

Maggiesfarm · 22/04/2021 11:35

Oh it's gorgeous!

GCAcademic · 22/04/2021 11:35

How can they not know? Surely you offer the deer a blue blanket or a pink blanket to sleep on, and you have your answer?

EBearhug · 22/04/2021 11:37

At work, we were more concerned over whether it was an IKEA pencil or a school pencil and what a rubbish unit of measurement a pencil is. Not a standard thing like a bus or the size of Wales.

So they don't know it's size or how it identifies.

picklemewalnuts · 22/04/2021 11:38

3lb fully grown! Can I have one? please? I'll use the right pronouns and everything 😍

HamsterV2 · 22/04/2021 11:40

The ideology has reached animals now?

This might explain a lot. My MALE cat prefers playing with pink mouse toys rather than blue and brown ones. Do I adopt a watch and wait approach or take him to the vet?

Actually, I'm not sure if I should be using male pronouns at all. Should I stick with he/him even though he's been neutered, or should I resort to they/them so no feelings are hurt?

Trans tibs are tibs.

Cwenthryth · 22/04/2021 12:27

Tbf, at least that is true, we don’t know it’s gender. What with it being a tiny deer and not having one nor any understanding of the concept.

I bet it knows which of the other deer is it’s Mum though

And FWIW mouse deer are deer, there’s an exception to everything :-)

Being able to identify out of a short life in a veal crate would be very appealing, though.
hallouminatus · 22/04/2021 12:40

Article has now been corrected: "Its sex is not yet known..."

hallouminatus · 22/04/2021 12:44

..or maybe not, as it also says "Senior mammal keeper Paige Bwye said it would be a little while before the zoo was able to determine the gender of the fawn..."

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2021 12:46

'... as they are so small and shy'.

Pretty sure 'shy' indicates they're all feminine doesn't it?

RabbitOfCaerbannog · 22/04/2021 12:48

Funny little things aren't they

Greencoatblue · 22/04/2021 12:50

Being able to identify out of a short life in a veal crate would be very appealing, though.

UK outlawed veal crates in 1990 and the EU in 2006. Still a good idea to identify as a heifer though, until it comes to having to be mated and calve.............

PaleBlueMoonlight · 22/04/2021 12:58

..or maybe not, as it also says "Senior mammal keeper Paige Bwye said it would be a little while before the zoo was able to determine the gender of the fawn..."
That’s fair enough, though. It is a quote and loads of people use gender when they mean sex.
Candycane57 · 22/04/2021 12:59

Nevermind the GC stuff, I actually thought it was the product of a mouse and a deer mating for a second there. Good grief.

MarshaBradyo · 22/04/2021 13:02

They changed it that’s good

Its sex is not yet known however it is only the second mouse deer to be born at the zoo in the last decade.

persistentwoman · 22/04/2021 13:06

Wonder what the discussions were about it being changed! Grin
