You can just about read it from this photo on twitter. There's a opinion piece at the bottom from Baroness Nicholson talking about the confusion of the Equality Act trap.

Gotta love the Baroness!

Erkrie · 21/04/2021 12:35

I thought John Lewis was better than that. They probably were once.
If a customer acts in appropriately John Lewis will take action after the event and a woman or girl has been left traumatised and violated.
Shame on John Lewis. Another one to add to the shit list. I've spent a fortune with them in the past. They can fuck off now.

OhHolyJesus · 21/04/2021 12:38

I think this tells you all you need to know about John Lewis - but I'll check the Twitter out too

You’d think given their financial problems they’d engage their brains but then they’re a stonewall champion.....

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 21/04/2021 12:45

For actual fucks sake. Ok they are on the list then. Where am I even going to shop? Why are all the businesses so ignorant?

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 21/04/2021 12:47

I was very disappointed reading this last night, I mistakenly thought JL had done a u-turn as this all kicked off a couple of years ago didn't it?

I also thought M&S had done a u-turn too but they were mentioned in that piece, does anyone know if they are still saying it's identity not sex?

I really really need some bras, running out of places to shop!

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 21/04/2021 12:47

When I say this, I mean the whole hoo ha on twitter

highame · 21/04/2021 12:49

Lets all start using the Mens - that'll shake it up

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 21/04/2021 12:50

Is it cynical to assume they know most minor sexual crimes, ie. flashing, groping, watching others' in a state of undress are not reported?

RoyalCorgi · 21/04/2021 12:52

Is it cynical to assume they know most minor sexual crimes, ie. flashing, groping, watching others' in a state of undress are not reported?

They might know that. But they also know - I would hope - that if a woman is groped, flashed etc in one of their changing rooms they will lose one customer and that if she tells other people they will lose many more. So I think they are stupid rather than cynical.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 21/04/2021 12:54

Wasn’t there a story recently if a police officer covertly filming female colleagues in a gender neutral changing area at their station? I think we can guess how seriously such crimes are taken even if reported!

Helleofabore · 21/04/2021 12:57

Wasn't there a story recently about a Sainsbury's staff member filming female colleagues in the changing rooms last year?

ClingFilmAndGafferTape · 21/04/2021 12:58

This has been their policy for a while. That screenshot from Twitter is gross and the fact they don't seem to grasp what can happen in mixed changing rooms means their a no from me.

Tibtom · 21/04/2021 13:00

@highame

Lets all start using the Mens - that'll shake it up
At least we would know the men are not there in order to use women either to validate their identity or for sexual kicks (not that they may not take the opportunity). And upsetting men may actually result in changes.
LostToucan · 21/04/2021 13:10

Mark’s and Spencer Corporate People Policy:

Treating everyone equally regardless of age, gender, gender reassignment, colour, ethnic or national origin, disability, hours of work, nationality, religion or belief, marital or civil partner status, disfigurement, political opinions or sexual orientation.

We treat all colleagues with dignity and respect and expect colleagues to treat each other and our customers in the same way.

So Gender not Sex.

Which is isn’t in compliance with their commitment to uphold national law either.

YouSetTheTone · 21/04/2021 13:11

Tibtom that’s true. Probably safer in the changing rooms where men are actually respecting the fact men and women have different spaces.
Only problem is it probably wouldn’t annoy them. Unless they struggle to find vacant cubicles.
Ffs JL. I have spent a FORTUNE there. I’m going to email them and tell them why they’ve lost a customer.

LostToucan · 21/04/2021 13:18

John Lewis also seems to include “sex” as a protected characteristic:

We positively celebrate diversity & inclusion in the John Lewis Partnership. Truly embracing individuals’ contributions, regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, social background, religion or belief. Having a diverse and inclusive culture throughout the business is vital for our future success and that’s why it is at the heart of our ultimate purpose; the happiness of all our Partners.

Sorry, that should read:

SmallPug · 21/04/2021 13:44

I think we should use the mens, per Highame's suggestion. Also is everyone writing to JL?

AllMumsyWereTheBorrowedClothes · 21/04/2021 13:44

I wrote to John Lewis, and M&S, in Nov '19 with recent examples from national press, and a link to Fair Play For Women's excellent explanation of the legality of Single Sex spaces under the 2010 Equality Act. Both sent anodyne replies, assuring me that in the aftermath of an incident they would take the necessary action! Well that's all right then isn't it, silly me!!

After a brief exchange of emails JL sent the attached reply, M&S just ignored me. I had to conclude they just DON'T CARE ABOUT WOMEN I've not been in M&S since, and use waitrose for higher welfare pork, and free newspapers. I have saved thousands I think, and discovered fantastic local businesses. I'm sure JL and M&S are delighted not to be tainted by my filthy lucre.

Waitrose is John Lewis.

StillFemale · 21/04/2021 13:55

Just emailed John Lewis to ask them to close my online account and told them why. I’ve not really been using them since it looked like they were going down this route but hadn’t closed my account. Previously they were my first port of call for many items.

AllMumsyWereTheBorrowedClothes · 21/04/2021 14:10

I realise waitrose is part of JL but I also have farm animal welfare concerns, and like meat, so I compromise and spend a modest amount there. I'd prefer not to, but my other option has almost no free range meat. They won't grow fat on my bacon consumption.

ChristinaXYZ · 21/04/2021 14:53

Is there any chain shop that DOES state that their changing facilities are single sex?

OP posts:
ChristinaXYZ · 21/04/2021 14:56

Just to add to the above it would be great if some of these companies would be 'Sex Matters' of Fair Play for Women' champions instead (if only there were such a thing) committed to the actual groups mentioned in the Equality Act and promising an impact assessment, based on those groups, for staff and customers when they change anything.
