Getting your pronouns tattooed? Really quite extraordinary

nickymanchester · 20/04/2021 13:19

I presume this photo is genuine.

This young woman (she appears to be female) was showing off that she had had they/them tattooed on her collar bones:-

pronouns tattooed

I really do wonder what led them to want to take such drastic action?

Well, if tattooists are open and taking commissions, they probably want the money. They'll be self-employed.

Also, masks are really great disguising yourself for the purpose of photos. I will be continuing to use mine for that even when the pandemic is over!

TheABC · 20/04/2021 16:34

On the plus side, at least she's put some thought into it and not woken up with a string of stars on her arm, after a night out.

But yes; this is going to date badly.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/04/2021 18:37

That's quite sad Sad. They have painted themselves into a corner, making it doubly difficult for them ever to change their minds; hostage to their own tattoo.

LostToucan · 20/04/2021 19:02

Reminding people is going to be a bit chilly in winter.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/04/2021 19:33

Doesn't help that I keep flashing onto a great black and white horror film about ants 😁

HopeClearwater · 20/04/2021 20:06

I don’t get the barbed wire ...

Couldhavebeenme2 · 20/04/2021 20:16

@YetAnotherSpartacus

I wish some of the students I teach would get instructions about how to use the poor, oppressed and maltreated possessive apostrophe tattooed on them. Preferably somewhere they can easily see when writing the assignments that I have to mark.
Surely you mean the proper uses of there, their and they're? Wink
MissBarbary · 20/04/2021 20:17

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee

Do you mean the tattoo that people get to signify their struggles with mental health? It used to be a semi colon, but some are just apostrophe's.

Seems harsh to judge them for that

Shouldn't that be "some are just apostrophes"?
MrGHardy · 20/04/2021 21:37

Hahahahahahahahaha

Thanks for that laugh.

On a similar note, this cat's reaction to the girl telling her pronouns is cosmic:

BlackeyedSusan · 20/04/2021 22:04

you just need to order a special pen form delores umbridge, spartacus and get the kids to copy out the rules a hundred times, that should do it...

as for the tattoo... my response is: oo that looks sore...

NiceGerbil · 20/04/2021 23:18

I quite like them! But I like tattoos. In general i think getting them in such prominent places is very brave (work etc) but it seems to be a thing now.

It also could refer to anything.

Meh.

AnyOldPrion · 21/04/2021 06:57

Given that the sex of this person appears obvious from a shot of a small portion of anatomy, it seems unlikely that different pronouns will protect them from misogyny, but perhaps it’s the optimism of youth.

Perhaps in future it’ll be a badge of honour to have tried.

highame · 21/04/2021 07:24

I thought the sex was ambiguous. Still not sure

I agree highame. That's why I put in my OP

(she appears to be female)

Rather than just saying "This woman..."

I have met a couple of transwomen that could easily have had that same photo taken.

oldwomanwhoruns · 21/04/2021 08:11

I weep for today's girls.
In my day we rebelled by getting our ears pierced (one hole only, of course)
And also we rebelled by getting anorexia. (most of us recovered)

Now girls are rebelling by getting dreadful tattoos and taking irrivirsible drugs. It is so sad. :-(

oldwomanwhoruns · 21/04/2021 08:12

Doh spelling - irreversible irreversible ...

WindyPudding · 21/04/2021 08:40

I can’t agree that anorexia was/is mostly harmless - it has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness and can cause serious damage even if you survive.

But I do think it’s important to look at why trans identity is partly replacing it and how they seem to be driven by similar feelings.

Babdoc · 21/04/2021 08:50

MrGHardy, thank you so much for that cat video link! It was hilarious. What a perceptive, GC cat.

Ah well. If I got it wrong and they sees the thread, then them’ll probably be delighted.
EyesOpening · 21/04/2021 09:36

Given how effective “push” and “pull” on doors are, I can’t see this having the (assumed) desired effect

Someone on that Twitter thread, wrote
“If you watch closely, the cat seems to roll its eyes at about eight seconds.”

Nonmaquillee · 21/04/2021 10:44

@SmokedDuck

That will be a problem if they want to change them. My daughter, 13, was at a drama camp recently where they were asked daily what their choice for pronouns were. (She is so not in need of that bs, and it turns out all theatre stuff is full of it. So now she is stuck.)

Similarly at student union meetings at my university, you have a new identity card every time because these things are apparently not that fixed.

They were asked daily?!?! OMFG. Can't believe there are adults out there who enable and reinforce this nonsense.
DeclineandFall · 21/04/2021 10:53

I'm pretty GC and I'm old but I do think outrage at this makes people look like intolerant and petty. Crap tattoos don't automatically lead to irreversible drugs.

The kids are covered in rubbish tattoos these days. As long as no-one is making me tattoo my pronouns I don't give a shit.

Scepticaltank · 21/04/2021 10:55

OMG that cat! That cat knows the rule. Who is she, the cat's mother?

Nope.
