Reading the comments following this post by Glennon Doyle I am really struck by how much this issue is framed around:

A: protecting people's children's rights (not those of older men who want to be women)
&
B: gender is a performance - then what is so hard about recognising that it is different from biological sex then ffs?

I totally agree with the performance element. There's a strong sense of 'look at meeeeee' with a lot of adherents to the ideology.

If gender is a performance then men wrote the script.
