I will be interested in how many of the candidates accurately name the issue as male violence against women.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/04/2021 17:35

Who are 'minoritised' women?

And where did that bloody word come from?

stumbledin · 19/04/2021 17:49

I think minoritised is voluntary sector speak for what used to be BME because everybody loathes the horrible BAME word that the media came up with.

Although maybe it means anyone who is a minority eg disabled, or ...

Just after posting this saw LGB Alliance is having one at the same time, and now my HA along with others is also having a hustings at the same time.

I feel my "identities" are now having a civil war as to which one will be pandered to!

Groups commonly called 'ethnic minorities' (or 'minority ethnic' in the context of BAME) is not a 'natural' minority but a product of a particular society/history. Women of colour (black and brown, indigenous, 'non-white') are a global ethnic majority. The term minoritised includes the understanding that some groups are actively minoritised (other terms might be 'othered' or 'racialised') in relation to an assumed white normative majority position.

Thanks for that explanation (I had to read it a few times) but think I grasp its intention. I hope it has meaning for those it is meant to encompass, but suspect the very mainstream that minoritises others wont grasp it.

Anyhow, although the hustings wont have any of the actual candidates answering questions apparently they have spoken to Stylist magazine about VAW!
