I watched this film last night with DH. Pretty blown away, has anyone else seen it who would like to talk about it?

The disparity between the reviews and what I believe the story is I find really interesting, particularly bias depending on the sex of the author.

Hello, I am really looking forward to seeing this, where did you watch it please? I was wondering if it was streaming online, but can't see it on Netflix, or available yet on prime.

AgnesNaismith · 17/04/2021 19:14

We downloaded it on sky, it was released yesterday - not sure if it is on prime or Netflix yet.

I found it disturbing and reaffirming, hope you get to see it soon.

No one yet? ⌛️

I watched it yesterday and absolutely loved it. I think I’m going to watch it again.

It’s really stayed with me.

Do you think she intended the ending? I think she absolutely did, DH thinks she only had stuff in place in case it went that way.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/04/2021 16:16

I've read about it and would like to see it but I think it's only available on Sky currently.

JensonsAcolyte · 18/04/2021 16:21

You could do the free trial of NowTV to watch it!

It would be worth it.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 18/04/2021 16:25

So both of those young women had to die to bring one creep to justice. Although he probably would have claimed rough sex defence or some other misogynist bullshit and got out of it anyway. And that cheery ending with the emoji text message. I did not like it, I thought it trivialised something utterly horrific. Plus all those men at the party would have recognised her in an instant.

QuentinBunbury · 18/04/2021 16:26

I've downloaded, will be back later in the week once I've watched it Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/04/2021 16:27

I may do that, Jensons! May even be getting Sky when DP and I move in the near future.

VaizyCrazyDaizy · 18/04/2021 16:28

Brilliant film!

They wouldn’t have recognised her, that was part of the point. She was ‘unfuckable’ at college so they didn’t give her a second thought, plus she was a faceless sex worker at the party so 🤷‍♀️

I love the fact all her targets were offered redemption, except Al obviously.

I liked how it was cleverly done so you weren’t sure whether she had done awful things to people to start with.

I was so angry with her boyfriend at the reveal, I thought he might have been the exception.

I don’t think Al would have got away with it because of how they covered it up.

rumred · 18/04/2021 18:45

I watched it earlier and was so fucking disappointed. She meted out punishment to the women, not so much to the men. Then she dies.
I was saddened and actually distressed by the end. I can't see men after watching this thinking ah yes I have been unreasonable and rapey. She was portrayed as crackers.
Meh. Missed opportunity

AgnesNaismith · 18/04/2021 20:16

I don’t know, she portrayed the pain she felt so intensely well on behalf of her and her friend I felt what she did made sense. What life was she living before anyway? Have you not ever felt what is the point when men can be absolved of anything because of their standing in life?

The end was distressing, though I couldn’t look away - like I had to see the proof. Plus I don’t care whether men think they’ve been rapey or not after watching it, it doesn’t have to change anyone’s mind. This happens every day and it’s real, it shouldn’t have to be toned down to pacify egos.

And most men who rape aren’t convicted anyway. I wonder how many women die because of that.

OP posts:
rumred · 18/04/2021 20:52

Well quite. I would just at least once in my lifetime like to see women succeeding. Rapists being held to account, not merely embarrassed by a woman pretending to be pissed. Then getting murdered. It felt to me like the women suffered the most (she was harsher on the Dean and the old friend than any of the abusive men she encountered) . And yes I know that's life but we can watch women being degraded and murdered all day long. Was a happy fair ending too much to ask? Obviously yes. I was expecting better, more radical, fairer

BrizzleGirl · 20/04/2021 23:11

Oh my fucking god!!

After seeing the trailers back in the beginning of 2020, couldn't wait to see it. Then lockdown.

Signed up to Now just to watch it and spent half the movie severely pissed off she wasn't killing off the rapists!

But actually the story and the ending is more powerful than the usual vendetta story.

The Ryan angle was obvious from the start and when he called her a stupid bitch the misogyny shone through ...

But the ending OMFG.

I'm gonna watch it all again.

I'm going to get my teenage son to watch. He'll be bored but hey tough shit!

Loved it, loved it, loved it!!

BrizzleGirl · 20/04/2021 23:15

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

And do you know what else? No gratuitous sex scenes. Ryan and her doing the dirty? Nothing but kisses.

Thought I was going to have to fast forward when the video was going to watched, but no! Nothing! And didn't take away from the film at all.

No violence against women shown on screen. Well apart from the end, but don't think I've ever seen a murder like that shown on screen.

Datun · 21/04/2021 01:05

It was 'inspired' by the Brock Turner trial, wasn't it?

AgnesNaismith · 23/04/2021 15:29

Bumping because I found out that the actress who plays Camilla in The Crown wrote and directed this film. How talented is she?

I loved and won’t forget the tiny details - the scrunchie on her hand and muddy soles. Protecting men and judging the women surrounding them is so ingrained into society still.

I sat at a pub table this afternoon (woo) listening to some older couples, one was talking about their adult son’s girlfriend. She was describing her as ‘sweet’ and they all simpered and nodded like ‘sweet’ is something to aspire to. They were checking she doesn’t want to see him too much and isn’t having an influence on his decisions.

Passive, that’s what is expected. That’s why I loved this film, she wasn’t passive...it killed her in the end because currently men are protected and believed at all costs...but she was strong.

She was also the main writer for the second series (6 out of 8 episodes) of "Killing Eve" which is a seriously good show.

She's got serious form for good writing. She's also had three books published as well.

Perhaps the women are MNer's. There's been this long running couple of threads on just this topic:-

I loved it! And I loved that ultimately Al was going to prison for a long time though it burns so badly that he would never have been put away for the rape. She had to make him commit another crime to ensure that he paid for what he did. I thought it was so powerful the way it showed how men’s reputations are so prized above women’s suffering and the unshakeable belief all those men had that they were ‘nice guys’. I was utterly blindsided by the Ryan reveal. And I felt really sorry for Cassie’s dad (the only genuinely nice guy in it?). Carey Mulligan was astonishing. And the scene of her walking to the house with that creepy version of Toxic playing - it was spellbinding. I wished it could have ended happily for Cassie but that wouldn’t have been honest. The only way she could get justice for Nina was to do what she did (which did work out slightly implausibly neatly but I’ll buy it anyway!)

AgnesNaismith · 23/04/2021 19:28

Wow @nickymanchester I had no idea, loved Killing Eve too!! I’m going to have a look at her books now too.

So so SO talented!

After I posted here and nobody was talking about it, I spent a couple of hours learning about Emerald Fennell.

To be so talented and she appears very humble.

I just love love love this film!

Ruminating2020 · 23/04/2021 23:53

Just finished watching this and I'm so blown away by it. I am conflicted about the ending and wished she didn't have to pay with her life to bring Al to justice. She had the video after all, could she not have used that against him?

Datun · 24/04/2021 00:22

Wow, i had no idea she was that prolific.

I do know that she, along with everyone else, was utterly outraged by the lenient sentence of that 'promising young man' who raped an unconscious girl.

Fantastic talent to be able to create a concept which address is it so cleverly.

There was a thread about his appeal.
