Interesting how these men react in such an immediate, confrontational and typically aggressive way to being called pet names. Yes, the dynamic is different but I love how they immediately put the cashier in his place. I have sometimes reacted in s negative way in a similar situation but I always feel rude, churlish and unnecessary. These guys do it with such panache!

Interesting that the comments mainly label those men as homophobic.
Have to admit I call people love and have worked in retail. I don't see it as being sexist in most cases, just regional dialect.

AssassinatedBeauty · 10/04/2021 14:14

It's aggressive homophobia. Not something to admire for me.

There's also big difference between calling someone "sexy" or "senorita" (!?) compared to the UK regional tendency to call people thing like darling/love/chuck etc.

Oh my goodness, love number 1, and the two that do the ‘drop’

Some of them are really annoyed!

Dh hadnt clicked that it was a man doing the pet names

Babdoc · 10/04/2021 15:29

Interesting that the checkout man doesn’t then snarl “frigid bitch”, or tell the chaps they should smile and be grateful for his attention...!

Really? And yet he keeps on doing it. I assumed he was making a point about how women are constantly addressed with terms like 'sexy', 'baby doll' etc. as a way to demonstrate to men how demeaning it was.

Gumandbass · 10/04/2021 15:48

Do you ever go on Tik to op?. This cashier does lots of this type of video, the 'customers' are part of the act

How often does that happen in a retail setting though? I get called love, my lovely, sweetheart, me dear, me duck, flower...it's not offensive. I don't think I've ever been called sexy in that setting.

The video is proving nothing, bar homophobia as the customers are reacting to a man saying it. It says nothing about sexism, those men probably wouldn't bat an eye if the cashier was a woman.

Would depend on the woman

GNCQ · 10/04/2021 22:01

Well to be fair the customers all know they're on TikTok and are getting their 5 seconds of fame.
I bet it's working for shop sales!

I can't think of any time I've been called any of those terms in the video by a cashier.

Men call other men Pet all the time in the North East. Nobody is at all bothered by this.

And in Liverpool I'd wonder WTF I'd done wrong if I didn't get called pet names everyday by everyone.

A waitress in Yeovil addressed me as ' moy lover' many years ago 💖 . I was tickled as she could have been my mum.
