What's with the infantilising of women's nightwear?

I was just looking for a nightdress (peri menopausal and completely unable to wear pyjamas any more because I'm so bloody hot at night Sad) on M and S (never again). I was struck by all the Disney bloody characters? I'm not 5yrs old, I don't want to wear Disney characters. Out of interest I had a look at the men's. No Disney, no cutesie stuff, just very normal (if boring) pyjamas. So what's that all about?

Men do habe disney pjs. Star wars is disney and loads of mens pjs have it on. You can easily buy plain or floral or stripey womens pjs if cartoons arent your thing. I personally think women actually have a much better choice in pjs considering all our other clothes are shite in comparison.

‘On these sort of topics it's really common for lots of posters to take it as an attack on their personal preferences. Why is that?’

But that isn’t happening on this thread. People are simply disagreeing with the OP.

There is an issue of infantilisation when adults adopt childlike qualities such as lisping high pitched voices, reduced vocabulary etc.

There’s not an issue with liking things that are cute and fantastical, especially when you are at home relaxing and not expected to perform some kind of serious abstract task.

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 21:25

Well sure I know you can find it if you shop around but that's a pita. Also I feel that women's nightwear has got really really pricey in the last few years.

I prefer comfort, I hate anything even slightly scratchy. I don't really mind having all sorts of odd motifs on my nightwear but Im still interested in the discussion.

ChewtonRoad · 08/04/2021 21:25

I'd not buy a Disney-themed nightdress unless it featured Ellie and her Adventure Book from the film "Up", but what others do is their choice. I would consider Snoopy (gentle humour) or the Moomins.

I have a Tatty Teddy nightdress bought when life was awful and I needed something to give me a lift.

I find women's nightdresses and loungewear labelled with "Princess" or similar irritating and wouldn't give them house room.

steppemum · 08/04/2021 21:25

totally agree OP.
I don;t want my nightwear to have cutsie anything on it, no disney, no sleepy lambs etc.

I agree, while I have no objection to anyone wearing whatever they want, I get irritated with how much women's stuff is aimed at preteen girls.

Either that or it is designed for you local prostitute.

MissBarbary · 08/04/2021 21:26

@SappysCurry

Try Lands End OP Lots of nice cotton plain adult nightwear on there
There are loads of options available.

I just think some posters on here get some sort of weird, masochistic satisfaction at finding something skimpy/nasty/ revealing and then about moaning how everything designed for women is always so awful

AtlasPine · 08/04/2021 21:26

Almost impossible to buy a well made, natural fibre, plain, unadorned nightdress. (IMO)

Of course we are all entitled to our likes and dislikes - I completely agree with OP about Disney on adult clothes. But appreciate it’s a matter of taste.

Morgan12 · 08/04/2021 21:26

My DH has Star Wars pjs and Marvel pjs. He also has a chewbacca onesie.

I also have spiderman pjs. I love spiderman.

A rather nasty and again a huge exaggeration.

Seriously where on earth do some of you shop?

borntobequiet · 08/04/2021 21:27

Pants and an old T shirt for me, or thermal underwear in the depths of winter. Saves money, time, effort and avoids being annoyed by teddy bears and cartoon characters.

Morgan12 · 08/04/2021 21:27

Oh I also have Minecraft pjs and hello kitty. Because I like all those things.

You're fishing here tbh. Because you're wrong.

Waferbiscuit · 08/04/2021 21:27

Agree OP.Disney on grown adults look ridiculous. Why would anyone choose that.

Not v classy either!

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 21:28

And that's made me think of the other thing I've never understood, liberty.

Why are clothes that are considered 'smart' usually the most uncomfortable?

Why if a woman decides to wear a hello kitty t-shirt does that reflect on her knowledge if she's talking about abstract v concepts or whatever?

And men don't get it so much- a man in a super hero t-shirt is just... Whatever. Although if he had one with a teddy bear on that would be a bit odd.

Quaagars · 08/04/2021 21:29

Would love some Spiderman PJs!! Are they in the women's section?
(I'm a short arse and anything in the men's section usually swamps me lol)
Although Superman would be even better

Why does my nighty need to be classy?
LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 21:30

What do you need to be classy for if you are in bed?!

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 21:30

'Either that or it is designed for you local prostitute.'

What an awful comment in so many different ways

Reminds me of men who think clothes send 'signals' and use it as an excuse for awful behaviour.

MissBarbary · 08/04/2021 21:31

That's completely untrue. Fgs I was in hospital unexpectedly last year and my husband managed to find exactly that in Sainsbury's Tu range.

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 21:31

I do actually have a pair of tartan pjyamas in case of a paramedic or fire visit.

I have been caught out by this before when a family member was dying and the Marie Curie nurses turned up and I was in owl pjyamas.

Quaagars · 08/04/2021 21:32

Grin

Stay classy, ladies

fuck that

I agree. I managed to omit the word "comment" in my response but I meant to say "rather a nasty comment"
Morgan12 · 08/04/2021 21:37

@quaagars I got mine from Truffle Shuffle and also have a pair from amazon.

Brilliant, thanks, love Truffle Shuffle - will have to have a look!
Not bought anything from there for ages, did buy several Muppet t-shirts a few years ago, that'd probably be frowned upon too going by this thread but meh lol
