On another course I'm doing with Coursera, the assignments are short peer-graded papers. We have MCQ tests too.

If I start the course for free and change my mind about wanting the certificate do you think I can purchase the cert later?

Yes, this course is open and fully available for free. In addition, learners will have the option to register for a Coursera certificate for purchase, or through financial aid.

From memory you get about 2 weeks to make the decision on the Coursera courses I have done, and its quite clearly stated once you're in. I think you get an email as well.
I'm trying to italicise or bold but for some reason desn't work on the preview. Oh well.

I have done this course before. It is really good.
