Given I helped fund the successful court case and have been incandescent about it, I was horrified to discover that DH had casually filled in the Census a couple of weeks ago for the whole household without checking anything with me.
He was surprisingly hazy about how I could change it but I have eventually done so today
And was delighted to discover there is a Comments box at the end where you can give them feedback to improve future Census... including comments on Personal Questions.... So I did
Mine:
I am shocked that this Census used a non-legal definition of Sex until an emergency court case, which told it to use the legal definition.
This was unnecessary and costly to taxpayers. As a British Citizen, I expect the Census to follow the law.
It was also bizarre, demonstrating that the Census staff had been "captured" ie used the advice of trans-lobby groups to write the question, instead of the law. Particularly strange since you had consulted widely including with those who professionally depend on accurate statistics,& had stated in January you would be using the legal definition.
It has meant that you will have collected data that is statistically incorrect. By releasing the census early with the wrong information, a significant numbers of trans-identifying individuals will have self-identified their sex instead of using their legal sex. This is unfair to those needing accurate data & indeed to the many transpeople who want transpeople to be accurately counted
Yes there is a word count and I did it fast and foggy-headed so not the best but did mean I have stood up and will be counted! Hoping they have had lots of feedback about this....
