Gender identity question on the census

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but am currently filling out the census and have come to the voluntary question on gender identity. I would prefer to leave blank as I don’t believe in gender but if pushed sound say I identify as the same gender as my sex ...not sure whether it is better to have more accurate data which will hopefully show more people identify with the same gender as their sex (even writing this makes me cringe) or better for it to be patchy because people ignored it. Not being v eloquent tonight, soz. Thoughts?

The gender identity field is only for those who are trans, non-binary etc. You don't fill it in if it isn't applicable to you.
If I understand it correctly, anything that is filled in the gender identity field will count towards the trans statistics, so if you're not trans, you can ignore the question.

It's more accurate to ignore it, though I expect a lot of people will think they should fill it in. So wthe data on those who 'identify as the same gender as sex' will be mixed with many people who don't 'identify with a gender' but can identify what sex they are.

Please dont fill it in!

To do so gives credibility to what is after just the view point of a tiny minority.

DH filled in ours online, he asked me (in a somewhat jokey way) what to put so I told him firmly to leave it blank.

Mighty tempted to identify as an Attack Helicopter (as a lot of people apparently are).... just for the snapshot in time for anyone who looks in 100 years time.

Ah, the one joke.

Sexmatters have a letter to put in with a papercopy. Not sure if the online gives you any opportunity to reject the concept of 'gender' as a category to classify people.

By the way, has the BBC reported on FPFW JR win in the past couple of days?
On the news today it was all about the voluntary questions: sexuality and gender identity. No mention of anything else.
At least the lesbian couple they interviewed were saying that they will be represented, the LGBT help line for Brighton was saying that it is not easy if you are not out to your family.

I imagine complaining is beyond any use with these woke BBC non- journalists.

LangClegsInSpace · 20/03/2021 02:07

Leave it blank.

It's a question for people who have a gender identity. Most people don't, from what I can make out.

Here’s a discussion we had a few weeks ago I’ve just bumped as well www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4175161-If-you-don-t-have-a-gender-identity-how-to-answer-the-census?watched=1&msgid=105725922#105725922

Many people are just ignoring the question. The ‘rise above’ option!

I felt that not answering was to be complicit in our exclusion from the conversation as it were - the assumption that everyone has a gender identity. The automatic inclusion of those of us that don’t under a ‘trans umbrella’ as agender rather than non-believers. Not answering is impossible to interpret.

So I was set to answer ‘no’ and write NO GENDER IDENTITY or GENDER ATHEIST

But I’m thinking I might take my inspiration from our suffragette foremothers in 1911, and the formidable JCJ, and leave the question blank but decorate and annotate in such a way my opinion is made clear. I have purple and green biros at the ready!

Still might write GENDER ATHEIST without ticking the box tbh. And annotate/decorate around the question.
