Sorry if this was already posted. I did try to search and couldn't find it. Knowing me there's probably a huge thread about it :/

Keir Starmer posted this link the other day. I don't know if there is more detail elsewhere. What do you think...?

Here is Labour’s ten-point charter - backed by the Mirror - to help keep women safe including extending 'whole life sentences' to anyone found guilty of ‘abduction and sexual assault and murder of a stranger’

Ministers are facing a furious backlash from angry women who are fed up with feeling unsafe on Britain’s streets.

Boris Johnson has said women must feel their complaints about violence are “properly heard” - and that his Government will make sure it does this.

But there is a difference between hearing somebody and really listening to what they have to say - and many are clamouring for immediate change.

The charter has been drawn up by Nick Thomas-Symonds, shadow Home Secretary, and Jess Phillips, shadow minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding.

So here is Labour ’s ten-point charter - backed by the Mirror - to help keep women safe and to end the injustices faced by more than half the population.

  1. Action to bring rapists to justice – rape convictions are at an all-time low with just 1.5% of people charged with rape are getting convicted, yet rape reports are up by 35%. We should fast track rape and serious sexual assault cases through the courts and CPS who have been left to wait years for their case to get to trial.
  1. New laws to stop harassment - as it stands creeps harassing women on the street are not breaking the law. That makes no sense and we need a new law now.
  1. Men who abduct, assault and murder women belong behind bars for life – let’s extend ‘Whole Life’ sentences for anyone found guilty of ‘abduction and sexual assault and murder of a stranger’.
  1. Proper support for victims of attacks – create a survivor support package, including a legal help for victims and better training for professionals to give people the help they need.
  1. Educate our young people – start a proper education campaign to make sure young boys and girls knows it is never acceptable to abuse or disrespect women- as well as the rules around sexual consent.
  1. Longer jail time for rapists and stalkers – some of the sentences handed out for these appalling crimes are a disgrace. Let’s make sure the time fits the crime.
  1. Treat domestic murders seriously – end the injustice that means someone can get a sentence of 10 years less for murdering their partner at home, than for murdering someone on the street.
  1. Make abuse of women count – the abuse of women that drives these crimes is not even counted by the police, that needs to change and misogyny should be recognized as the hateful crime it is.
  1. Fair access to Domestic Abuse services – no victim turned away from services for domestic abuse because of their background. Helping get support to all those who need it and making sure we can do more to catch perpetrators.
  1. It’s not women’s fault – stop the message that women are to blame because of what they wear, when they are out or for not ‘keeping themselves safe’. Time for a proper strategy to catch and punish offenders, challenge behaviour and improve the freedom of all women. "

Yeah yeah yeah. What's a woman, Keir?

Usagi12 · 18/03/2021 19:29

Is it just me or is this one a bit worrying?

What exactly do they mean, who is turned away because of their background. I have an awful feeling I may know the answer to this question.

  1. Stop insisting TWAW.
Outbutnotoutout · 18/03/2021 19:32

@teawamutu

Yeah yeah yeah. What's a woman, Keir?
Just what I can on to ask
GreyhoundG1rl · 18/03/2021 19:32

All those words on the necessity to keep women safe, from the party that insists women are whoever fancies giving themselves the title 🤷🏻‍♀️

Doyoumind · 18/03/2021 19:33

It would all be wonferful if we knew women meant females and services could be single sex where appropriate. But that's not the case.

Berthatydfil · 18/03/2021 19:34

I will be sceptical until they can define what a woman is.

OvaHere · 18/03/2021 19:34

3. Men who abduct, assault and murder women belong behind bars for life – let’s extend ‘Whole Life’ sentences for anyone found guilty of ‘abduction and sexual assault and murder of a stranger’.

6. Longer jail time for rapists and stalkers – some of the sentences handed out for these appalling crimes are a disgrace. Let’s make sure the time fits the crime.

But if they say they are a woman after they're arrested Labour will campaign to have them imprisoned with their preferred victims.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/03/2021 19:35
  1. Is just populist window dressing.

And the rest are good. But it needs to be DV services OF THEIR CHOICE which means single sex if women choose it.

I don't agree with Starmer about a lot but it's not a bad list.

MichelleofzeResistance · 18/03/2021 19:36

What's a woman, Keir?

That.

If you actually do care about women Kier, where are the single sex spaces for those who need them? Where is the anger about women's privacy, dignity, safety? Where is the defense of women's representation, seats, awards, sports?

This is pure bandwagon jumping. Publicity stunt, with no integrity within it whatsoever. Women's rights will be ripped away if Labour ever get into power, and we've already been told here, we're the wrong kind of women and our issues and voices will be not only disregarded but forcibly silenced and criminalised.

I'd honestly be less revolted if they'd own it.

It’s simply impossible to get past this.

Without acknowledging what “woman” and “man” means none of those statements mean anything.

OvaHere · 18/03/2021 19:45

5. Educate our young people – start a proper education campaign to make sure young boys and girls knows it is never acceptable to abuse or disrespect women- as well as the rules around sexual consent.

How does this sit alongside universities creating 'sex work' toolkits? How can we teach young boys and men to respect women as human and equal when our educational institutions concurrently teach prostitution as empowerment?

You can't protect women if you won't protect single sex spaces. Not much protection for women if you're going to potentially lock them up with their rapist and abuser is there?

Biscuitsanddoombar · 18/03/2021 20:05

If you don’t define that ‘women’ does not also include ‘men’ is, you can have the best laws & charters in the world and they are utterly meaningless

RedDogsBeg · 18/03/2021 20:06

Coming from the Party that has male paedophile rapists should be placed in the female prison estate Lisa Nandy on the front bench.

I'll pass unless and until the Labour Party make it crystal clear that they will never introduce self id nor make it easier to gain a GRC, that they accept that TW are TW and NOT women, that they will strengthen and increase protections for women based on sex not gender, that they will enforce and increase the provision of single sex spaces and services for women, just for starters.

I'll not bother holding my breath.

HermioneWeasley · 18/03/2021 20:06

Without being able to define “woman” none of this really matters.

UppityPuppity · 18/03/2021 20:07

Keir - if you can’t even be arsed to put out a statement supporting Rosie Duffield, then the rest means absolutely nothing.

And yes - policies to lock up rapists with women isn’t a good look when you pretend to care about women.

Imnobody4 · 18/03/2021 20:08

I'm disgusted at the way they've jumped on a bandwagon. It's wafer thin, total hypocrisy.
They're blatently distorting facts. They were going to abstain over the Crime Bill until they saw an opportunity to score points.
Rapists are so dispicable they should be imprisoned for life - with women if they prefer of course.

yourhairiswinterfire · 18/03/2021 20:10

Ah Labour.

The same Labour that don't know what a woman is.

Alex ''I don't need the vote of bigots'' Sobel. What's bigoted about not wanting vulnerable women to be locked up in prison with rapists?

Labour who remained silent when Rosie Duffield was being horrifically abused and subject to a nasty little witch hunt for liking a tweet. A tweet that said ''do you mean women?'' Didn't she give an interview afterwards saying she was surprised she hadn't been killed, the abuse was that bad?

That Labour now wants us to trust them when it comes to women's safety?!

I'll brush over the nefarious all women because we know exactly what that means in the Labour Party, but I agree with the rest of this statement. It should be made law that a defence barrister cannot, under any circumstances question the victim on what they were wearing, their underwear, what time of night they were out, whether they had been drinking, or dancing, etc. If a defence barrister has to place the blame on the victim for their ordeal in order to defend their client then they are beyond contempt.

MabelPines · 18/03/2021 20:16

Not one of those 10 points means a damn thing if single sex spaces don’t exist.

Labour aren’t losing women anymore,

Labour have lost women.

For 'background', substitute 'penis'.
NiceGerbil · 18/03/2021 20:23

Agree that this is just crap coming from labour after everything they've done.

I liked this best:

'Make abuse of women count – the abuse of women that drives these crimes is not even counted by the police, that needs to change and misogyny should be recognized as the hateful crime it is.'

They want stats about women now do they?

Hahaha Hmm
