Response to my #dontsubmittostonewall FOI request

I've had my response come through. I'd appreciate some other eyes to look over it and see what you think. What stands out to me is that they view the question about equality impact assessments as 'not applicable'
In response to your request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000:

  1. Any application you made in 2019 or 2020 to be a “Stonewall Diversity Champion” or to be included on Stonewall’s “Workplace Equality Index,” including any attachments or appendices to those applications. Please redact personal details if necessary.

No application made on these dates.

  1. Any feedback you received in 2019 or 2020 from Stonewall in relation to
either application or programme. No application made on these dates.
  1. Any other communication you have received from Stonewall in 2019 or
2020 unless privileged or otherwise exempt from disclosure (but if you claim privilege or exemption in relation to any material, please say in broad terms what the material is and the basis on which you claim to be entitled to withhold it).

Our contact with Stonewall comprises of liaising with account managers
regarding invitations for submissions that are open, Consultancy Session
for 2021 WEI submission, issues with inactive logins and replacement
logins, Stonewall updates on a range of topics e.g. new opportunity to
recruit diverse talent, 'Speak up against homophobia/biphobia and
transphobia', newsletters, conferences, webinars and announcements e.g.
Achievements of top Global employers, accessing Stonewall membership
areas.

  1. Full details of any equality impact assessment you carried out
connected with any of these applications (including any equality impact assessment carried out prior to an earlier application of the same kind, if no further assessment was done). Not applicable.
  1. Details of the total amount of money you paid to Stonewall (i) in 2019;
(ii) in 2020, whether or not as payment for goods or services. £5000. p.a. for membership as a Stonewall Champion organisation.
  1. Whether you intend to continue your membership of any Stonewall scheme
in the future, and if so which. We intend to remain a Stonewall Champion organisation and to apply for the Stonewall Employers Index in 2021.

You know what, I think I’ve seen a similar response. Have they been briefed by Stonewall to say set replies?
My Council were very forthcoming with information but they are way down on the Index so get no work cookies.

Could someone help me word a FOI request along the lines of ‘has Stonewall advised you on how to respond to FOI requests?’

I know inaccurate wording leads to issues so I’d like to get this right.

nothingcomestonothing · 18/03/2021 07:45

If they didn't apply to be a Stonewall champion (q1) what did they pay Stonewall £5000 for (q5)?

Strikemepink · 18/03/2021 07:50

I think the issue is that you’ve limited yourself to set dates, which is useful for FOI but I would go broader, eg in the last ten years or since a particular year. They have said the EIA is not applicable because they didn’t submit any applications in the years you asked about.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/03/2021 07:51

Does it mean they applied earlier, and the £5k was a renewal of their membership? It's quite a lucrative business for Stonewall, all these many organisations!

Quadzilla · 18/03/2021 08:00

Have a look at the request for Calderdale Council. They’ve sent back some really interesting documents including the feedback from their annual review with Stonewall. It might help you narrow down the information you’re asking for.

DoorhandlesUnited · 18/03/2021 08:08

Q1 asks about Stonewall Diversity Champion.
Q5 answer is about Stonewall Champion membership.
Are they different things?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/03/2021 08:18

I think it's the same scheme.

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/03/2021 08:22

Have seen a fair few of the same responses having waded through some .

I notice you also have missing EIA

I've yet to see one

FlyPassed · 18/03/2021 09:16

What does this mean?

"Our contact with Stonewall comprises of liaising with account managers regarding invitations for submissions that are open"

Are Stonewall telling member orgs to respond to government consultations? Is that why we have GRA consultation reaponses from conpanies like HSBC?

FlyPassed · 18/03/2021 09:21

Oh and we keep seeing responses which say n/a in answer to the question about applying to Stonewall, and i think that's because you don't actually apply, you just hand over the cash and you're in

DoorhandlesUnited · 19/03/2021 08:17

Been looking at some of the FOI replies. For one of the schools one of the answers is:

None known - possible that marketing email received (would have been
automatically allocated to junk and deleted after a few days)

As you can guess they are not signed up to the scheme Smile

ValancyRedfern · 19/03/2021 19:25

Amazing answer!
I used the wording advised by #legalfeminist. I wonder if I should rephrase to include other years, and ask if they ever did an EIA. Never done a FOI request before so not sure how best to go about it.
