White ribbon campaign - men can make the difference

Men can make a difference to end violence against women.

This is an excellent campaign and I don't doubt the sincerity of the founders. But it's disturbing how rapidly something centering VAWG becomes 'inclusive' of those who aren't women.

This pledge from Welsh politicians, shared by a 'White Ribbon Ambassador':
'a) recognises that women regularly experience harassment, abuse, violence and sexual violence
b) notes the term woman includes all those who identify as such.

I'm so tired of this endless gaslighting.

There was a man on Call you and yours(Radio 4) from the white ribbon campaign and he talked lots of sense.

Perhaps when men are trying to do something about reducing male violence, it's maybe not a bad thing that they consider both misogynistic and transphobic violence behaviours (Though of course they shouldn't be transexclusionary by ignoring violence towards transmen, if they currently are doing so).

Who's going to do the actual footwork/lamppost-to-post white ribbon tying?

As in actual feet on the ground, stomping the local streets, tying things on?

Will it be the men?

PurpleHoodie · 16/03/2021 17:01

Are they willing to go in bulk buying with women, so women save costs on their purple/green/white ribbon combo's?

We need details.

I don't disagree in principle Errol - male violence impacts on all sectors of society and that needs to be acknowledged. But the White Ribbon campaign is specifically about men's behaviour towards women, not about male violence in general.

Including transwomen immediately takes the focus away from women (and, as you say, doesn't include transmen). Statistically transwomen are one of the safest demographics and are protected by hate crime laws that exclude women/misogyny.

We are not allowed anything of our own it seems, not even a campaign about men's violence against women.

I thought that the white ribbon campaign was already taken by Discworld's vampires who had eschewed blood drinking. Although in the case of men perhaps it is apt in a symbolic manner.

What evidence do these Senedd Members have that males who identify as women experience harassment, abuse, domestic violence and rape to the same extent and degree as women and girls? Wasn't there a big campaign when the domestic abuse legislation was going through the Senedd a few years ago? Welsh Government wanted to call it the Gender-based Violence Bill and Welsh Women's Aid, Rape Crisis, etc insisted that it needed to be changed to Violence Against Women and Girls.

It shows just how extensive the capture is. Within a few years we have politicians who supported that change reversing it completely. Is it because they've never really understood male violence or sexism, or are they just stupid? Will they sign up to anything just to look good without giving any thought to the implications? So gullible and credulous!

Good questions Enfys.

The followers I can understand to an extent - easy, thoughtless, virtue-signalling (although I'm not sure why female politicians are signing a campaign that asks men to stand up against male violence).

But this level of ignorance from a White Ribbon Ambassador really annoys me. Mind you, almost everything annoys me these days!!
