I think we all know NACALT (not all cops...)

CrunchyBiscs · 16/03/2021 08:40

I think an organisation where the rules don't apply and you get to abuse or persecute women would attract wrong uns.

CrunchyBiscs · 16/03/2021 08:42

I suppose every day at work police officers see an avalanche of violence against women and girls being brushed under the carpet.

They know what they can get away with, so it escalates. Like with all dodgy men and boys

TheQueef · 16/03/2021 08:45

Both those statements allude to the fact that policing can be a haven for bad men. Not that ACAB to para.

Is that the suspect Seatime? I'd read in the mail that a cordon officer at one of the search sites for Sarah had been moved to back room because of inappropriate WhatsApp images.

CardinalLolzy · 16/03/2021 09:11

@NiceGerbil

I think she was trying to be reassuring- one bad apple etc.
The whole point of the bad apple analogy is that the other apples turn bad around it! "One bad apple spoils the barrel" ie it's not an isolated incident!

While I’m sure most Police officers join for the right reasons it’s not surprising that abusers would be drawn to a job where they get to be in a position of power, a job where hurting people is part of the role.

CrunchyBiscs · 16/03/2021 09:43

hurting people is part of the role.
Dentists, surgeons, nurses ?
I suspect most police join with intention of helping society.
But it's the same with all public services - one bad apple in the public's view ( if they follow the media's stance) means lots of bad apples.
It's a tactic to get the outraged to click on the headline imv and the outcome is that greater divisions in society are the result. But the media have got their clicks and their ad profits so that's what counts....

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 16/03/2021 10:09

That name definitely rings a bell. 🤔

twelly · 16/03/2021 10:36

Sadly a small minority of people do commit crimes, the police applicants. What is needed is more stringent vetting . Increased surveillance and follow up. All public sector workers are subject to a high degree of control anyway - this needs to consistently applied . I suspect the problems are when procedure and policies are not followed up or applied. Overall the police are a force for good

Imnobody4 · 16/03/2021 12:17

How about police officers social media accounts being subject to random screening. But that would offend against their human rights. But rape victims phones can be searched.

The independent police watchdog announced an investigation into a probationary constable involved in the Everard search who shared an “inappropriate” meme understood to involve graphic descriptions of violence against women. It did not contain images of Everard or from the investigation.

The police should have strong safeguarding practices from recruitment onwards, that means actively looking for red flags and acting swiftly when concerns arise. I very much doubt the average policeman is substantially different to any other man. Which means they stick their heads in the sand and buy the guy, who beats up his wife, a pint down the pub.

I suspect this has only been reported and being investigated because of timing.

Personally I expect men in the police service to have the same propensity towards offending as other men, with perhaps a slight increase caused by those attracted to the job because it offers ease of access to vulnerable women which may or may not be balanced by those with a genuine wish to do good. I certainly don't believe male police officers have a lower rate of specifically sexual or vawg offending Hmm

AdHominemNonSequitur · 16/03/2021 12:57

Not all police officers

RedDogsBeg · 16/03/2021 14:50

@Seatime

It's come out today that Sarah Everard's killer had been reported at work for sending an inappropriate WhatsApp message. This along with his flashing, shows he had a pattern of low level inappropriate behaviour that was part of his wider pattern of abuse. Look for patterns of abuse in perpetrators.
You've got this wrong @Seatime, the Police Officer reported for sending an inappropriate WhatsApp message is not the Police Officer arrested and charged with murdering Sarah Everard.

A police officer guarding the Sarah Everard murder scene allegedly sent colleagues inappropriate WhatsApp messages about her killing.

The probationary Met constable, who had been deployed as a cordon officer supporting the search operation in Kent, is said to have shared a meme showing images of a uniformed officer abducting a woman.

Horrified fellow officers reported the rookie officer's actions because they were concerned by its content. The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards was made aware on Friday.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/03/2021 14:52

I dread to think how pervasive this is

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/03/2021 14:54

A friend of mine refused to go further with complaints against an abusive ex. Why? Because the policeman dealing with it turned up outside her work, then tried to grope and kiss her.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 16/03/2021 15:00

I live in Bradford and always have. I chose not to report a sexual assault that I was subject to 18 years ago.

I did report a man trying to get me into his car two years after that, and got a crime reference number, despite it happening minutes before my call, and I was still in the area (although safe). No statement was taken and I never heard from them about it again. I was 17. Stopped going out on my own in the dark tho. Never reported anything ever again regarding sexual harassment, despite experiencing a couple of relatively serious incidents.

GCmiddle · 16/03/2021 15:23

No, not all police officers, but too many.
Remember this disgusting creature who downloaded pornography in a couple's house, whilst he was on duty there, guarding the house becuase it contained the dead body of their child

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 16/03/2021 16:07

I have a family member who worked for the police. Sacked (and prosecuted) for sexual assault. Took a plea bargain so they didn't end up on the register 😡

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 16/03/2021 16:07

(obviously as they're a relative I'm not gonna link the story and out myself)

The selfies taken by Police Officers by the bodies of Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry who were murdered in Wembley Park, utterly reprehensible - not all Police Officers but far, far too many.

What is going on? What type of individuals are being recruited to the Police Force? What is the prevailing culture that thinks this is all perfectly acceptable?

RoyalCorgi · 16/03/2021 16:45

What type of individuals are being recruited to the Police Force?

It's long seemed obvious to me that people who have a predilection for causing harm are drawn to positions of trust and authority. That's why so many sexual abusers are teachers. That's why so many women have stories of being sexually assaulted by doctors. That's why sadistic thugs become police officers.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 16/03/2021 17:02

But ppl get up in arms (and report my comment) when I state that AC...
