Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

@sash Will do.

Support your local Women’s refuge. We all know how tight funding is at the moment and how highly the need. Different organisations will have different needs. It obviously depends on who they have in at the time. Some do an Amazon wish list. You could send money or see if they need anything like clothes or toys.

Women who have to leave as a result of abuse often lose everything.

Liz Truss is taking a lot of flack in what appears to be an orchestrated campaign by Stonewall & acolytes, if you're writing thank you's it's worth letting her know you think she's on track.

Absolutely. I teach in a girls’ school and our school charity is our local women’s refuge.

Thanks guys.
On the subject of your local refuge you can link your amazon account to a charity via Amazon Smile, you just shop as normal and amazon pays a measly 0.5% but it does add up, I got an email saying my chosen charity (local refuge) got £112.07 this quarter, obviously not just from me.

I have a few shares, when I get invites to AGMs I always fill in the 'election' part with support for every female and not for all males, I think the women have worked harder to get there so making it not automatic for the men to be on the board.

I have the Centre for Women's Justice nominated.

A thought on the point about women losing everything when they leave - I have so many really good quality clothes that would have gone to charity shops if not for lockdown. Would it be worth offering them to a refuge?

I’m “meeting” this week with the course organiser ( from our work ) to talk about this . I’m fortunate to be in a work situation where I can do that safely - I appreciate that many women can’t do this.

This.

For those of us who can - and some of us can - use the word sex, use the word woman, use the word mother at every opportunity, say no - the word gender isn’t in the Equality Act, say I’m not going to declare my pronouns thank you, please don’t say c*s - I am a woman because of biology not stereotypes.

Thank you for all the positive and encouraging ideas so far. Can I please ask that posters don't refer to women as cis here? I don't want to report messages but I find it offensive.

A quick suggestion - try not to engage with people using threads on FWR as an opportunity to trash women, dead or alive. Huge progress is being made with women re engaging with feminism and some people are determined to try to sabotage this. Nice reminder persistent and we seem to be very disciplined right now.

Some great suggestions on here. I'm going to make sure that any money I spend on books will be supporting and encouraging women. The next books I buy my DC will be ones written by Onjali Q. Raúf.

Haven’t rtft so this may have been suggested, but how about small (or big) acts that challenge gender stereotypes and the overwhelming societal view of how women should look and act?
Have child needing me so sorry my examples won’t be great, but I shaved my head a couple of years ago because I was sick of the gender stereotypes, some days I refuse to wear a bra, I will not wear heels whatever the occasion.

I highly recommend this author. My son went to a talk she did about 'The Boy at the Back of the Class' and was so excited when he returned. She was all I heard about for days after Grin

So many great ideas.
In addition to all the women centred charities that have not been regulatory captured, another great charity for spare cash is JKRowling's Lumos which aims to tackle the causes of family separation – poverty, abuse, domestic violence and disability discrimination.

Ignore obvious attempts at derailing feminist threads to become about men rather than centering women

Just placemarking until I can read this fantastic thread properly later Flowers

Agree on contacting your child’s school/college to ask about their policies and plans for PHSCE classes.

As well as linking your Amazon account to a women’s refuge, you can also find Wish Lists for the refuges where you can buy something for them - they usually have things like multipacks of shampoo, large tins of coffee, etc.

Perhaps sponsoring a girl in another country to help pay towards her education.

Always challenge when gender is used when they really mean sex.
