Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

For parents of young boys, I really love the stuff at Sonshine Magazine.

That's worth a subscribe too.

@WarriorN

Evarish, are you U.K.?
Nope. And while I wanted to move to the UK in the past, I think I'll skip about two decades, now (or... maybe sooner, depending on the elections, but I'd rather leave the fear of losing my legal protections to a vague possible future rather than constantly in all forms of media).
Wondermule · 14/03/2021 13:31

Great idea! I will be joining and and following suggestions.

Keep being a thorn in the side of people who promote anything harmful or dismissive of biological women. Every time such an issue is raised on here, as many of us as possible should write to the relevant person and keep pushing, pushing, pushing.

I am incredibly grateful to our modern day suffragettes and have been intending to write and thank them for months, but I will find the time this week.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 14/03/2021 13:32

Always worth writing to Baroness Emma Nicholson - she's tireless.

WarriorN · 14/03/2021 13:33

Nope

figures.

rumred · 14/03/2021 13:33

Stop using phrases and language that imply men are superior - eg man up, grow a pair, ball ache, etc

Only buy cards/gifts that aren't stereotypical (it's surprisingly hard to find non gendered birth congratulations cards)

Don't change your surname when you get married (obvs a situational action)

Draw vulvas randomly (I'm intending to take a spray can out next week. So fucking fed up of dicks everywhere)

WarriorN · 14/03/2021 13:34

And the baroness replies so quickly, she's amazing!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/03/2021 13:36

I particularly have appreciated it when Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has said on more than one occasion that MTF trans people face oppression but that is different to the oppression female people face.

And when she recently said that JK Rowling's thoughtful and moving essay on her feelings and experiences as a woman was a "perfectly reasonable piece"

FlatteredFool · 14/03/2021 13:37

I cross out gender and write sex on every form that comes my way.
I curler from sexist stereotypes and sexist nonsense that my children repeat from what they've heard on SM or at school.
I challenged my tutor on the use of gender when sex was the appropriate term.

FlatteredFool · 14/03/2021 13:40

Challenge not curler Hmm

Thelnebriati · 14/03/2021 13:45

Find ways to cut through the inertia. People wont speak up until they realise it s going to cost them more to stay silent than to speak out.

its only on social media
it doesnt affect me
its not my problem
theres nothing I can do about it
it costs nothing to be kind
its nice to be nice
Its not all men and even if its most of them its not my nigel.

Not My Nigel!

MsAwesomeDragon · 14/03/2021 13:51

I make micro loans to women's organisations in developing countries through kiva.org I generally make one loan a month, but can make more on months when I get repayments.

I sponsor a girl in India through Plan international. I get vague updates about her welfare (no photos or anything personal) and she's now at secondary school and doing well. She wants to be a nurse. Without sponsorship it's quite possible that she would have had to leave school by now to help support herself.

WarriorN · 14/03/2021 13:53

Michele Moore and Heather Brunskell Evan's book inventing transgender children is only 10 quid on kindle.

Invisible women is only £1.99 too!

gardenbird48 · 14/03/2021 13:53

Call out people who repeatedly use the word ‘c*s’ even though they have been asked not to. People that seem to think that it is imperative that everyone else can dictate how others refer to them except biological women.

I have been writing to every organisation I come across re use of gender instead of sex. Also, check out the policies of your local Hospital Trust to see how they deal with the clash of requirements wrt single sex wards. Sometimes the fact that they state that they prioritise trans people over the rights and needs of women is quite well hidden.

Conservatives for Women (open to all political persuasions) are a good group and write to the members of the House of Lords as well as MPs regarding concerns over self id by the back door (which is currently still a real possibility).

loveyouradvice · 14/03/2021 13:54

Thank you Rumred I needed that....

I am in tears at the moment, overwhelmed by yesterday, and came on this thread for some inspiring action ... which it is full of - thank you.

And I laughed out loud reading this - so powerful! Thank you for enabling me to laugh and smile through my tears

FindTheTruth · 14/03/2021 13:55

thanks for this thread and all the new ideas.

I taught in mixed sex schools for 17 years. I saw a lot of graffitied dicks. Being teaching in an all girls’ school for 3 years, funnily enough I haven’t seen one graffitied vulva 🤷‍♀️

motherrunner · 14/03/2021 13:56

If anyone wants to email the DWP I'd be grateful, they have removed 'sex' from their equality statement because 'gender' is more inclusive.

Some great ideas here.
A quick suggestion - try not to engage with people using threads on FWR as an opportunity to trash women, dead or alive. Huge progress is being made with women re engaging with feminism and some people are determined to try to sabotage this.

It's been great to find out more about smaller charities for ending violence against women and girls. Worth adding to your donation list.
