Absolutely.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/03/2021 12:13

Perfectly put, SunsetBeetch. Ridiculous to equate people who fought in the wars to a bunch of ragtag rentamob people looking for a fight, some of whom are looting shops and violently attacking people they don't like, many of whom are privileged young far left activists screeching about defunding the police and abolishing prisons. I very much doubt most of our grandfathers and great grandfathers would have been of the same mind.

TeacupDrama · 14/03/2021 12:20

it's obviously more important to let drunken men celebrate a football team winning a league than to let peaceful sober women commemorate the death of a woman at the hands of a policeman,
policemen using their superior physical strength and size to intimidate women the sheer lack of analysis is mind boggling
what would have happened at Clapham common if there had not been a single police officer actually nothing, the risk of covid outside is miniscule in comparsion to the risk of a woman being a victim of sexual harrassment

merrymouse · 14/03/2021 12:21

I’m standing next to the Bandstand at the moment looking at people continuing to flock to place flowers and messages, and then looking at the nonsense being posted on here and it’s making me as angry as I was at 9pm last night watching the police marching towards us.

I'm angry that a tragedy has been hijacked by a group that supports violence against women and has very niche political views (e.g. don't incarcerate rapists) that are very unlikely to be shared by the majority of people attending. The MRAs don't need this thread. They were in Clapham Common.

I don't doubt that most people in Clapham Common were they to pay their respects and express their concerns and fears.

Dobbyafreeelf · 14/03/2021 12:23

@Cwenthryth

the banners were there from the start (and all related to ending male violence against women) Well that’s clearly not true from images widely shared of “ACAB” (all cops are bastards) banners and the group on the bandstand holding a banner stating “NO KILLERS NO COPS” with drawing of pigs on it. I don’t believe for a moment that the anti-police disruptors were the majority of people present yesterday but it seems odd to deny their well documented presence hijacking the event.
The trouble is the police played right into the hands of the ACAB yesterday. And every time there is such a disproportionate action taken by the police it does the same. The ACAB didn't develop in a vacuum. If there hadn't been so many incidents of the police overstepping then I don't believe they would have much the support they do. The police need to take a long hard look at themselves.

What needs to happen is men to stay away from vigils for women.

Had only women attended (with women only police officers surrounding, and women only journalists) the evening would have been different.

What’s an MRA?

CristalCarrington · 14/03/2021 12:45

Cancel that, just found it !

So, to sum up, a peaceful vigil that should have been allowed to happen (as BLM was) was told it could not go ahead. Women still wanted to pay their respects and show that society must change its stance and do more to protect women.

Women peacefully gathered, laid flowers, said prayers-calmly & respectfully. Then some fringe groups took centre stage-sisters uncut & a group with signs saying ACAB-footage of a petite red head being arrested is plastered all over the media & the first words out of her mouth are 'TW and xxx women should be safe' (The term is banned so I can't type it.)

Very illuminating that some groups still centre trans women.....women are never allowed to just gather & fight for the safety of other women. At any large protest, fringe groups will infiltrate-never more so than yesterday.

From the reaction of the crowd here it looks like Sisters Uncut were pretty popular: twitter.com/SistersUncut/status/1370847160770699266

Bearing in mind sisters uncut lobby for the rights of males who identify as women-they had no right to be present at that vigil. Suggest if anyone is in any doubt-do some looking online.

As long as they got to jump on the vigil for their own agenda, hey.
ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 14/03/2021 15:36

Using their own (banned here...) terms, a * * woman is kidnapped and murdered by a * * man, and somehow it's still all about that other group of people.

Anyone listen to Andrew Castle on LBC this morning? He was there and said it was peaceful until police moved in. He was honest (I think), said there were a few verbal anti police comments but nothing more than that. He was very much of the opinion that the police escalated it.

I was really disappointed to hear some of the police calling in, not willing to listen or engage, it was all about them and their defensive feelings.

I completely agree with that

It was entirely peaceful and the police were standing a way back, bar a few of them at the foot of the bandstand.

There were people in orange high vis vests with ‘official observer’ written in them moving around writing in notebooks but I’m not sure if they were there as part of the police or organisers. Plus several others in blue ‘police liason’ vests.

And all of a sudden, the police surged forward in considerable numbers pushing everyone forward while simultaneously shouting at everyone to get back.

Not only was it patently ridiculous to be kettling people while telling them to move away, it was a totally antagonist and aggressive move.

I wasn’t in the ‘inner circle’ who got caught up and pushed forward but if I had, I would ha w stood my ground. They had absolutely no basis for ordering anyone to move, none at all.

And as the footage shows, the women arrested were standing stock still and silent.

The Met statement was absolutely bare faced lies to say objects were thrown at police. Nothing was thrown.

This is exactly how he described it. I need to stay off Twitter, just seen a police officer use the #bekind about the met police. It has enraged me, normally someone supportive of the police.

Looks like Cressida Dick will go but that isn't going to solve the issues.

Really? Have you got a source for that please?
jj1968 · 14/03/2021 16:18

There's a livestream here of the protest outside Scotland Yard in response to yesterday's events if anyone's interested:

Justanotherworkingmom · 14/03/2021 16:20

Incredibly sad that some low lives are using a dead woman to excuse low level criminality and provoking the police. There was absolutely no need for any of these “protestors” to be on Clapham Common last night. The same message could have been sent using entirely lawful and dignified means. They are beneath contempt.

CorvusPurpureus · 14/03/2021 16:24

Hmm. Seems to me that whenever Sisters Uncut rock up to an event for women...women start getting abused verbally or physically hurt.

It's uncanny 🤷🏻‍♀️.

merrymouse · 14/03/2021 16:25

Re: Cressida Dick, it’s up to Sadiq Khan and Priti Patel, who don’t exactly see eye to eye, so who knows?

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 14/03/2021 16:28

Sad to see a remembrance event get hijacked, and not only by some who were there (shameless and self-righteous), but by those who weren't, and who love the political capital that posturing on the issue will bring (Khan).

And all leading to talk about issues other (Cressida resign! Why not ban this/that/the other protest in x,y,z city? Ad nauseam) than the sad fact that led to the gathering in the first place.

stumbledin · 14/03/2021 16:30

The woman arrested is linked to Women's Strike who have a similar agenda to Sisters Uncut.

I've posted on another thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4191571-Clapham-Common?pg=2 so wont repeat myself, but these groups regularly piggy back on other events, women or otherwise with the expectation / hope of an arrest and more importantly a good photo op for the main stream media.

They you get to spout your agenda about policing / the UK is a police state and everybody starts talking about your agenda and not the purpose of the vigil.
