What happened to the Eddie I Guardian thread?

I was looking for the details of where to complain to the guardian about their headings and positioning for this, but the thread has gone poof!

Eddie isn't considered a trans woman by herself. She's genderfluid.

Are you trying to make it sound even more offensive?

LarryUnderwood · 13/03/2021 08:44

I dodnt send it to the letters page, no. I think its far too long to be printed. Perhaps I will forward it to letters today. To be honest I just wanted to register my disgust, and I wanted it to be taken seriously. Hence I tried to make sure I kept it related to the editorial code. There were many other things I hated about that interview but it would have taken an essay!

Excellent letter OP.
I have long noted that the (Owen Jones loving) Guardian editors and sub editors have dripped poisonous misogyny into many ‘cultural’ articles and opinion pieces but this was so crass as to be completely overt. Boob envy. Boob envy.
They haven’t notated the removal of that subheading - is that usual?
No problem with Eddie feeling like she’s in ‘girl mode’ - but not acknowledging the bedrock of patriarchy and objectification of women that allows you to claim that in a national newspaper with seemingly no compunction? I have a big problem with that.

BlueBrush · 13/03/2021 08:56

Fantastic letter, OP.

Just seen this tweet from Anya Palmer about the fact that the Guardian changed the headline away from the "boob" quote, but apparently without logging it in the usual way.

Great letter OP. Even if something doesn’t necessarily breach the editorial code, I think if enough people complain, the reader’s editor will address it. Similar happened with the Peter Sutcliffe obit: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/nov/23/guardian-obituary-peter-sutcliffe

LarryUnderwood · 13/03/2021 09:01

Let's see. I forwarded it to the letters page with 1 small amendment - I added that the approach to street harassment was one that could place women in more danger if we chose to adopt EI's approach.

Great move op. Did you sign it with a mans name - they might be more inclined to listen? A pp mentioned that her DH has pretty much every letter published.

If they don’t - more fool them. I would be interested to see what effect this has on their subscriber figures. It seem that the Times, Spectator and maybe Telegraph are seeing some healthy increases.

MiddlesexGirl · 13/03/2021 09:24

@MrsWooster

Yes, Andante, what could it possibly be about Eddie’s situation that makes Eddie Teflon... it’s a tough nut to crack, that’s for sure.
This.

It's not like every derogatory post or thread about Boris Johnson gets removed.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 10:14

So bloody infuriating, but this is probably true

Lilyofthevalleys · 13/03/2021 10:14

Yesterday I learned of a woman in her 50s, the wife of a work colleague, who has died of breast cancer. Today Sarah Harding of girl’s aloud has spoken in the times about her terminal breast cancer. One in three women will get breast cancer.

I can not eloquently describe my rage at boob envy. It shows so little regard for the female experience. The guardian see women as fetish objects if this is what they are promoting.

I am angry!

Lilyofthevalleys · 13/03/2021 10:15

Well done OP for a well composed letter.

I feel far from composed about this.

LarryUnderwood · 13/03/2021 11:25

@Lilyofthevalleys me too. Isnt it ironic that even as I was writing it I was careful to remain composed, and controlled, because I was conscious that anything less might be dismissed as hysterical.

I can’t react to abuse in the street the way Eddie can, because unlike Eddie I am not built like a brick sh*thouse.

Right? It is just so...I don't even know what the word is. I am boiling with rage at the guardian, and the interviewer. Not so much woth EI actually. I really do believe that EI is entitled completely to see and speak about things as they wish. But the fawning, unquestioning approach from journalists, and yet women expressing any misgivings are hauled over the coals. It disgusts me.

I have to say, I've noticed this guardian writer standing up / speaking out a lot in the last few days:

WarriorN · 13/03/2021 12:33

Her twitter feed is great.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 13:32

Susanna Rustin is one of the good ones.

ListeningQuietly · 13/03/2021 13:42

How long will she last ?

And your voice is probably not as deep either.

There was a study done some time in the seventies which indicated that the deeper the voice, the more authority it carries. No idea what it was called or who did it, but I remember thinking at the time that it came as no surprise to me.

When I am on the phone, a man on the complaints line in shops will call me "Sir" and jump to try to rectify the shop's mistakes. If I am at a complaints counter in person, he is quite likely to deal first with the man who arrived there after me, or even stop dealing with my complaint in order to sort out his when he arrives.

Maybe I ought to say loudly that such a complaints person is being transphobic in their behaviour (if we ever go into shops again) and see how much panic I can cause him!

A lot of voice coaching work for women is carried out on this basis.

Adultfemale2020 · 13/03/2021 14:30

I saw this article this morning and was annoyed. Is being a woman just having breasts?

BettyFilous · 13/03/2021 15:33

DH started reading the Izzard article and was so infuriated by it he just deleted the Guardian app from his phone. He says the Guardian has felt ‘off’ for a while but this tipped him over the edge.

IDanielRadcliffe · 13/03/2021 16:10

Ladies, come along now and stop taking sides. (Picture is the tweets below his EI article)

What happened to the Eddie I Guardian thread?
zanahoria · 13/03/2021 17:23

Except Simon does not speak to his critics

BraveBananaBadge · 13/03/2021 18:04

Yes, noticed yesterday Simon's one of those who replies to the praise and ignored anything that wasn't.

It was his intro that did it from the off. "Eddie Izzard doesn't understand what all the fuss is about." I was swearing at the screen from there on in - and pretty much at Hattenstone's framing of it all more than what Eddie had to say.
