She seems quite the character.

nauticant · 10/03/2021 16:22

A few years back I used to disagree with almost everything she said.

@nauticant

A few years back I used to disagree with almost everything she said.
I've family and friends in Warrington so it's very difficult for me to get past that.
nauticant · 10/03/2021 16:31

My particular ick was following the uproar of Savile she referred to those wanting change to happen as belonging to the child abuse industry with the implication that it was about extracting money.

nauticant · 10/03/2021 16:33

But to get things back on track instead of derailing, my perspective now is that unless someone is really far out there, these days I've shifted more to judging the argument rather than the person.

RoyalCorgi · 10/03/2021 16:41

She is great on the issue but my heart sank when I saw it was her. As Embarrassing said, she has given her support for the IRA in the past and never retracted it. Made some remarks that appeared to minimise paedophilia. She was aggressively pro-Brexit (I don't mind people being pro-Brexit, but she was unpleasant) and very anti House of Lords but accepted a peerage nonetheless. Also part of the Spiked/Revolutionary Communist crew who have a fairly unsavoury past.

McDuffy · 10/03/2021 19:04

I didn't know the history stuff! Just judged this speech on its merits. At least more peers are speaking up Smile

I often wondered if the RCP was an MI5 front - and I'm not alone among socialists on that score. On the other hand nobody seems to have any reservations about Lionel Shriver who is also a GC ally. She supports Loyalist terror groups and describes the Irish as ' a scummy potato residue '. Apparently it's all our fault Brexit isn't going swimmingly. Not the sort of friend I'd normally want. But needs must when the devil drives.

I had and continue to have plenty of reservations about Lionel Shriver and I'm sure I'm not alone. However, I've moved from a position of shouting at the radio when she comes on to listening and then deciding whether in this particular instance she's saying something reasonable or not.

She sent me a lovely email back when I wrote to thank her for her contribution to the Maternity Bill.
