The latest in UK children's publishing and the racism of gender ideology

For anyone not aware, children's publishing is pretty woke...

The current crisis is a 'known transphobe' being appointed to - essentially - write some blogs. Authors, agents and others in the field are earnestly sharing their vague denouncements - sample here.

This is the awful woman they refer to - an award-winning writer for young people, who also runs two charities, one looking at the trafficking of girls and women in the UK, and the other providing funds for refugee aid teams.
www.booktrust.org.uk/news-and-features/writer-in-residence/#!?q=&sortOption=MostRecent&pageNo=1

The accusations of 'transphobia' are based on a speech at a WPUK meeting in Sept 2019 womansplaceuk.org/2019/10/01/the-sheer-audacity-of-our-existence/

"As I look around in today’s world, I see more and more bewildered women and girls feeling confused, alienated and afraid.
Women like myself and my Sikh or Hindu or Jewish friends who need single-space places to safely unveil, wash up and reconfigure ourselves; or women who are breastfeeding and lactating and needing a space to let it all hang out; or women going through the menopause or chemotherapy who need safe spaces to just be looked after, or young girls on their first ever periods or sprouting breasts who need space for support and reassurance."

As with JKR's essay, there is no suggestion that people might actually read things for themselves and make up their own minds. The writer's been labelled as one of the bad ones. That's it.

These are mostly (though not exclusively) white, middle-class women criticising a woman of colour who writes about and works to support refugees, victims of domestic violence, victims of trafficking. But not overtly - perhaps because they know that it would look incredibly racist to do so (many of them have condemned JKR on more than one occasion). Perhaps because 'transphobia' is supposed to come from 'the far right' and be allied with 'white supremacy'. Perhaps because they know that with all the evidence to hand, no one in their right mind would think that someone like this is 'bad' rather than 'good'.

It reminds me of the abuse Hibo Wardere and other FGM campaigners get, for focusing on material reality rather than inner identities. And it reminds me of the ways in which 'black women' and 'trans women' are so often paired together as the groups that must be included in your definition of 'women', as though these are simply two different kinds of women when 'black women' is an obvious subset of 'women'. It just seems so unbelievably privileged and the kind of behaviour that gender ideologues/TRAs claim GC feminists engage in.

The level of DARVO-ing is too much sometimes!

Yes. The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler for me was an example of that golden age. A book I absolutely adored and felt like it had been written just for me, a tomboy.

TheresAwholeWideWorld yes I've seen those authors very much pushing this agenda for some time now, and yes there are others, as linked in the OP and more.

bourbonne · 11/03/2021 14:28

Ah I remember that book @WindyPudding! God, can you imagine how this lot would reimagine it?

WindyPudding · 11/03/2021 14:36

Yes any book about that character now would be a book about being trans :( :( :(

You know what else - I didn't choose that book myself, it was suggested to me by my lovely teacher, Mrs Budd, who picked it out of the school library for me. Because she saw me, who I was and what it would mean to me. I'm actually teary now.

PotholeParadies · 11/03/2021 14:36

bourbonne I think we have a problem with what gets promoted and hits the shelves. I see exactly the same stuff on display tables. You have to dig for books that aren't those two categories.

PotholeParadies · 11/03/2021 16:36

Some members of this parish may remember Amanda Craig being dropped as a judge by Mslexia magazine, after she signed the letter condemning the bullying of JK Rowling. Again, usual crowd were involved in that.

Gerla · 11/03/2021 18:05

As these people are targeting the Book Trust for employing Onjali, I suggest you all check the BT on twitter and who they're following. Someone with the initials EJ. Take screenshots.

Not sure who/what you mean?

PotholeParadies · 11/03/2021 18:21

It's not really important. I was just very pissed off after reading the bullies' tweets. Disgraced politician who is now on the sex offenders register for viewing images of child abuse. Loads of people and organisations either want to keep an eye on him or haven't noticed they're still following him. I noticed the BT was amongst them a while back, and I remembered again. I felt absolutely enraged that this group of bullies was denouncing the BT for employing Onjali, but hadn't noticed that.

PotholeParadies · 11/03/2021 18:22

But tbh, it's meaningless.

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 12/03/2021 15:29

Maz Evans is back on Twitter. She says she's received over 30 death and rape threats purportedly from a community she supports. Utterly shameful. Those bullies who whipped up this behaviour should be ashamed.

bourbonne · 12/03/2021 15:46

She's "done being nice". Good for her.

There's an author quote-tweeted in her timeline who always seems to be at the heart of this stuff. Super saccharine kiss-kiss-kiss demeanour, but full of little digs and Queen Bee stings. It feels like a really cliquey world, where they're all playing at being Lady Bountiful.

goodwolf · 12/03/2021 16:18

I had never heard of Onjali Rauf but this thread has just encouraged me to go and buy one of her books.

Oh my god. Just read her tweet thread.

Someone threatened to rape her daughter and they confirmed they knew her daughter's school.

For balance

Balance? From what I can see, that account retweets anything racist and labels it GC!

Curioushorse · 12/03/2021 18:01

@TheresAwholeWideWorld I also work in the industry. Have you seen Kiran's latest tweet, and Maz' reply? Obviously saying cutting things, followed by the traditional 'x'.

I imagine there are crisis meetings going on in ChickenHouse right now! Their two biggest authors having a public spat! The editors (Rachel and Kesia) have come out and said nice things to Maz on twitter.......Interesting.

SpringCrocus · 12/03/2021 18:02

Utterly appalling. Just for tweeting support and congratulations

Helmetbymidnight · 12/03/2021 18:07

Oh don't you know, the threats are not from TRA's - they are from far-right extremists. Hmm

PotholeParadies · 12/03/2021 18:08

If it was on behaviour alone, rather than sales, I know which I'd pick. This is not a one off.

This is at least the third, if not the fourth, author I've seen her target.

There are an awful lot of these GC etc bot accounts. We should start TRA Misogyny. Oh wait, that's most of Twitter.

notyourhandmaid · 13/03/2021 11:00

@Helmetbymidnight

Maz has tweeted again on that point. It's really horrible that anyone would try to make that 'oh but you're not being kind to these people' point when she's getting such abuse.

twitter.com/MaryAliceEvans/status/1370484359468359680

Also, I'm afraid I don't buy that idea. If it were the case, wouldn't well-known trans people be insisting 'these lunatics don't speak for us' rather than... echoing the sentiments expressed? Whenever this abuse is mentioned, it's rarely 'oh you know those are sock puppets' and instead 'well there's abuse on both sides'.

Here's some er far-right extremists posing as TRA's to attack a lone man protesting against puberty blockers.

Shizuku · 17/03/2021 12:11

Doesn't Julie Burchill, the GC racist write children's books?

You talking to me?
Helmetbymidnight · 17/03/2021 13:09

Yes.
