The official IWD theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge.

At ReSisters we reckon that's an open invitation! However instead of virtue signalling about how good it is to challenge or whatever, we thought we'd, y'know, actually challenge some people and orgs, by asking questions, particularly those who are pretending they don't know what a woman is.

Please join us - who do you want to challenge for #IWD2021?

The hashtags are #ChooseToChallenge #SexMatters and #IWD2021.

Suggested format:

For #IWD2021 I choose to challenge for #ChooseToChallenge #SexMatters

See @ReSistersU for examples

Tweets with #ChooseToChallenge and #IWD2021 will hopefully reach a wider audience and #SexMatters will bring them to us!

And, If you use these hashtags in a tweet, we'll add it to a social media wall later today.

There's also a IWD official suggestion on photos which is ripe for subversion! (e.g. you could put #sexmatters on your hand). The images attached are the official IWD ones, they're asking people to take an image like this.

If you're not on Twitter, share your challenges here and we'll tweet them for you.

Brilliant idea to subvert the virtue signalling nonsense!

BlurtingOutTheInsideVoice · 08/03/2021 16:34

Excellent idea. If you don't want your face out there use these. Made by the amazing @Ecudorian_Mum

#ChooseToChallenge

The official theme for IWD in NOT choose to challenge. That is the sales logo for the pr company who bought the web site IWD.

If you want a theme for IWD, which was created by the UN then use the UN Women's theme.

We should know our own history.

We should not be so easily led that within 10 years an advertising agency has not only colonised the day but apparently our minds and thinking faculties as well!

Sorry have only just seen this is a thread by Resisters Shock

So would have expected more - please dont legitimise an corporate take over of IWD.

Thecatonthemat · 08/03/2021 16:55

Stumbledin but really wary about some of the UN stuff as they seem to think men can be women....

Bit harsh, no? I see scores of solid women's groups and feminists (no names mentioned!) have been taken in by this.

It's the first result when you type in "International Women's Day" into Google and the website is [[//www.internationalwomensday.com]] and it's all over Twitter.

What are they up to, do you know? It's not obvious at first sight who's getting something out of it, but they must be. What is it and who benefits?

I'm actually glad it's not the official one, we were keen to subvert it precisely because it's so vacuous! They're not actually asking people to challenge, just to say why it's important to challenge - which is a different thing entirely - so we felt that needed subverting by actually asking some hard questions.

Who's behind this? I fancy asking them some hard questions!

We've got a load of tweets lined up on this, I suppose we could drop the #choosetochallenge bit and just challenge anyway... or is it still worth subverting? Could be worth getting some subversion on their corporate tagline.

Hmm....

International Women's Day was not founded by the UN. It was started in 1909 by socialists in New York (I think) and was taken up by the Russian Revolution, and was a big festival in communist countries. The UN joined in with it much later.

This appears to be the organisation that is behind the IWD website and other "ventures" www.aurora-ventures.com/Work

I had no idea, but love the idea of subverting it!

BlurtingOutTheInsideVoice · 08/03/2021 22:13

Good to know however the un_women didn't have a consistent hash tag.
#choose to challenge was trending at one point and lots of companies used it so when they check out twitter they may see alternative opinions.
Un women tweeted out about how transphobia kills hundreds of trans women. Beyond parody.
Maybe next year we'll all win the lottery and not have jobs so we can dedicate serious time to an organised campaign!

Oh, yes please! Grin

Can you imagine the difference we could make if we actually had some serious money behind us!

Have you ever looked at the budgets of the likes of Stonewall? 😯😯
