What is the woke agenda?

Taswama · 07/03/2021 11:20

So, my lovely mum has heard this term on the news and ask me if I can explain what it means or send her some links that do.
My first thought is that 'woke' is the modern day equivalent of 'political correctness' and specifically the trans agenda of denying biology and focusing on people's identity rather than biological reality. (I think it was the attack on Jenni Murray a few years ago that first got me interested).
But I wonder if there is a better way to explain this?
I have discussed transwomen in sports with her previously and was looking for a mainstream article on the judicial review on women's prison to send her, but couldn't find one.
We are basically a leftie family but it's the right wing press that is honest about this and using terms such as woke.

Please help, oh wise women of FWR!

I think 'woke' has become a handy by-word for a set of assumptions and attitudes that arise out of inter-sectionalist politics; largely adopted by the British left, and which arise from the U.S style identity politics of power and privilege versus victimhood and oppression

Justhadathought · 07/03/2021 11:35

What it leads to is people being lauded purely on the basis of their determining characteristics: race, sex, sexual orientation - and now 'gender identity'; not necessarily on their talent, ability or suitability.

Taswama · 07/03/2021 11:38

Thanks Just . That's confused me more! Is intersectionality a bad thing? I thought it was just acknowledging that a black lesbian woman will suffer more discrimination than a white straight woman?

Woke refers to people who are interested in identity politics of race, gender and sexuality but don’t care about class or sex.

It is also generally opposed to freedom of speech and sides with employers over workers.

Wandawomble · 07/03/2021 11:53

Woke politics pretends to have an equality agenda but actually it’s becoming fascism dressed up as inclusivity. And I say this as a BAME woman who is becoming increasingly pigeonholed under the woke agenda.

Wheresyourclapham · 07/03/2021 11:59

Woke means being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice.

There is nothing wrong/negative in being conscious and wanting to change the ills in society.

HeyDuggeesCakeBadge · 07/03/2021 12:00

Woke IMO is the now mainstream far left ideology (think uni students) intolerant of anyone with differing views. You only have to look at the purity spirals people get into, specifically on twitter, if you don't adhere to all of their dogma.

I am a life long leftie but can hold a conversation with people with different opinions but you can't even be friends with someone who votes differently these days without being called a nazi.

Thanks Just . That's confused me more! Is intersectionality a bad thing? I thought it was just acknowledging that a black lesbian woman will suffer more discrimination than a white straight woman?
That's what it used to mean. Now its used to mean that a white male non-binary person is more oppressed than the black lesbian in your example. Its been completely turned upside down and now only how you identify is relevant. Actually being something: black lesbian female is 'reducing people to their race or sex or having a genital preference'. I don't think the term 'woke agenda' is helpful because its too broad and covers too many issues with a wide range of people and motivations, some good and some bad, but if I were to sum it up I'd describe it as people becoming so determined to 'punch up' that they don't care who they're punching.
DisappearingGirl · 07/03/2021 12:03

My mum is in her 70s and her equivalent of the word "woke" would probably be "right on".

As a previous poster said, it's no bad thing in itself, but can veer into daft or dangerous territory when combined with a lack of common sense or life experience, or when influenced by a group with a particular agenda.

Wheresyourclapham · 07/03/2021 12:08

Where did the term woke come from?
(Text below extracted from Dictionary.com)

Figurative woke—being socially and politically awake, or aware—starts emerging in Black English at least by the 1940s. A 1943 article in The Atlantic quoted a Black United Mine Workers official from 1940 playing with woke in a metaphor for social justice: “Waking up is a damn sight than going to sleep, but we’ll stay woke up longer.”

By the 1960s, woke could more generally mean “well-informed” in Black English, but it still strongly aligned with political awareness, especially in the context of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950–60s and appearing in the phrase stay woke. The term was notable enough to prompt a 1962 New York Times article commenting on Black slang, titled “If You’re Woke You Dig It.”

A 1972 play about the Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Garvey Lives! by Barry Beckham, notably used woke for awareness of racial injustice in the Black community: “I been sleeping all my life. And now that Mr. Garvey done woke me up, I’m gon stay woke. And I’m gon help him wake up other Black folk.”

Singer and activist Erykah Badu is credited with helping to revive woke in her 2008 song “Master Teacher,” whose chorus dreams of a better, uplifted world.

After Trayvon Martin, a young unarmed Black man, was shot dead in February 2012, many in the Black community issued calls to stay woke to the discrimination and injustice Black people face in the U.S., particularly in the form of police brutality.

Especially under the hashtag “#staywoke” on social media, woke took off in 2014 with the Black Lives Matter movement, ignited by the tragic shooting of two other young, unarmed Black men by police officers. Among activists, woke and stay woke were cries not just to be aware of racial injustice, but to organize and mobilize to do something about it.

Woke was quickly appropriated by mainstream white culture in the mid-2010s, to the criticism of many Black observers. In many instances, woke did spread in keeping with its activist spirit, referring to awareness of other forms of injustice, such as sexism, anti-gay sentiment, and white privilege.

In other cases, though, the force of woke was diluted as it became the subject of humorous memes or just casually used as a label for anyone who is “with the times,” not necessarily engaged in the fight for justice and equality. This dilution especially occurred on woke Twitter, with major brands appearing to capitalize on social justice to appeal to millennials.

Now, stay woke is pretty abundant in mainstream media … everyone from Childish Gambino to Netflix is cashing in on the phrase’s popularity but also spreading its 100% important and influential meaning, as well.

It’s good to ask questions if you are not sure. Good luck with explaining woke to your Mum.

WarOnWomen · 07/03/2021 12:12

To be woke is to be awakened to the social injustice that exists based around different groups having privilege and power over other groups who are powerless and oppressed. It's all based around identity. People in the privileged section are told to check their privilege and people in the oppressed group are victims.

My objection to it as a minority ethnic woman is that everything is seen through a lens of identity politics. As a BAME I must be oppressed. Actually no, I'm not. I feel being woke means that I have to see myself as a victim. I refuse to believe I don't have personal agency. Just because I am from a BAME group doesn't mean I look at everything with that lens. I have other priorities as a mother and as a daughter, for example, with aging parents. I am complex human being who has a whole host different, sometimes conflicting priorities and needs.

I also don't want or need white people to check their privilege. It's so condescending. My DPs niece is ashamed to be white with her privilege. Angry That's not right, is it? She's not the only one either.

Zinco · 07/03/2021 12:14

"Woke means being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice. There is nothing wrong/negative in being conscious and wanting to change the ills in society."

But what if you're making exaggerated claims about the nature of racism in society; actually going to the point of being an anti-white racist yourself, and have batshit crazy ideas you are putting forward as "solutions"?

All the time you are convinced that you are righteous and have the moral high ground?

Perhaps some people might start using "woke" in a mocking fashion...

Taswama · 07/03/2021 12:20

Thanks all.
So woke originally meant 'aware of your oppression' in Black communities? But has become about who is the most oppressed and identities over facts. The agenda bit is about silencing the voices of those who disagree and about virtue signalling by big brands about how right on (yes, agree with that Disappearinggirl ) they are?

Thanks Waronwomen - the oppressor / victim narrative is very interesting.

I actually filled out an online questionnaire a few months ago to see how privileged I am. Ok, so not the most scientific but this the nonsense it spouted. I don't recognise the person it says I am but some people would take it seriously.

What is the woke agenda?
Taswama · 07/03/2021 12:26

Thanks Zinco - I saw the Levi wokes video years ago, it's great. Will take a look at the other one too.

I'm off out now, but will check back later.

I think if you wanted diverse definitions of what “woke” means, you wouldn’t have asked it on a board where it’s exclusively used in a pejorative fashion Hmm

Maybe you can enlighten us and the OP then? Disagreement is good if backed up by opinions and/or evidence.

Yes, I agree. That is exactly the problem with racists/people with their own agenda.

People are using woke in a mocking fashion, therefore, the damage to the term woke has already occurred.

FTMF30 · 07/03/2021 12:46

@Wheresyourclapham

Woke means being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice.

There is nothing wrong/negative in being conscious and wanting to change the ills in society.

That's what it used to mean. But it's been appropriated and sullied by the white middle class.
Wheresyourclapham · 07/03/2021 12:49

‘That's what it used to mean. But it's been appropriated and sullied by the white middle class.’

@FTMF30
💯 agree

Firstbellini · 07/03/2021 12:49

Part of the problem is that people who believe in cancel culture/ critical theory/ standpoint theory/ wokeness/ language is magic/ class and sex don’t matter etc deliberately avoid giving their perspective a specific name.

By avoiding naming it they can then present their ideas as simply the truth rather than an ideology.

In the absence of them giving themselves a name they’ve become referred to as woke, social justice warriors etc. They don’t generally refer to themselves as woke.

WarOnWomen · 07/03/2021 12:49

Would you be explain this a bit more? I
