Here’s a list of some online events for International Women’s Day 2021 – quite varied but not that many gender critical ones. But I suppose if we don’t organise them they don’t happen!

On one of the threads about IWD we talked a bit about whether to have one or maybe two special IWD threads on FWR to make some public positive statements. Ideas were for a thread about amazing mums, aunts, grans, sisters … And/or women who have inspired us … Or ….

Just to add a point of history. The web site that says it is the “official” IWD web site is in fact run by a PR company, ie as a sales gimmick. What is so sad, but a lesson to be learnt, is that in about 10 years they have managed to get not just individuals but lots of organisations and even Government departments to accept that it is the official site. So if you see anyone using the Challenge slogan they are a victim of successful commercial advertising. Sad

If there is an “official” theme any year it might be the one set by the UN Women who after all got 8 March acknowledged as IWD in 1977. www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/11/announcer-international-womens-day-2021

There are a number of versions of the origins of IWD. Here is one! www.womenaid.org/events/iwd/iwdeverywomen.htm

Reclaim IWD for Women and Women’s Sex Based Rights!

Million Women Rise are having an online event on 6 March but there aren't that many details.

And the week long events in NI look varied and interesting - then you see who they have picked to launch their event. Sad

I knew there was a thread about this somewhere!

Anyway, if you are still looking for something to watch tonight, there's a panel about comedy and STEM at 7 pm tonight, free, an hour long, organised by the women behind Ada Lovelace Day.

Goodness, with Helen Staniland and a top array of women, Sacha White, Angela Wild, Heather Brunskall Evans, Maya Forstater, and Meghan Murphy, on from 5pm, (were a few sound issues at times) then the fantastic Irish Women's Lobby from 6.30-8.30, which went over time, I had a superb online International Women's Day.

I think the Irish panel were just incredible, Christine Gaffney did a cracking introduction & asked excellent question of the panel at the end. And all the speakers just blew me away. Great to hear women I follow on Twitter speaking, especially Anette Mackay and Rachel Moran. They are brilliant women.

The international panel was again full of really awesome woman being awesome, I just watched my concentration veer off for a while with the academic presentation by Klara. It was just a bit dry after 3hrs of hard listening I think. Glad its all being posted online at some point in the future.

Great that other events were going on too, just can't do them all!
