Interesting programme on R4 now about domestic violence and how to fix the men.

It's very good isn't it. Making me angry though that the narrative of 'It's a men's problem, not women's' is being spoken about as if it's a new idea.

It's great though that it's getting airtime.

The comparison with calling out racism is very interesting.

OhHolyJesus · 03/03/2021 09:28

If this was women's hour it would be all about the men but blaming the women.

I thought it was refreshing. I would have liked to have heard a perspective on perpetrator education programmes from a female expert - I think there’s evidence that they can be ineffective. (I realise this isn’t what Jackson Katz was talking about, but it’s relevant nonetheless.)

SpecialToffee · 03/03/2021 09:48

Yes, it was interesting. Not a new idea but at least it’s being talked about. It was emphasised at the beginning that even though violence occurs in same sex relationships and against trans individuals that the vast majority of violence is perpetrated by men against women. So that was parked straight away and the discussion wasn’t sidetracked at all.

Really interesting programme and most interesting of all was the notion that improving the lot of women who suffer violence and abuse might be too big a task to take on/we might offend the good menfolk.

Times radio had a discussion this morning. Head of Women's Aid and a victim. Loads of talk about funding, and they did the same thing. DV is 91% against women. They were fantastic on funding and how the need to inclusive is very detrimental to women. Was really cheered. The DV bill is back in the commons on Monday and there are one or two amendments - not sure what they are

What they never admit is that the American soap 'Friends' is fiction, and that dangerous people may have access to a woman inside her home.

The official fantasy is that all women are helpless to leave, or indeed to do anything for themselves, if they have now or at any time in the past had an 'intimate personal relationship' with someone (long gone non-residents included) now presenting an unpleasant side.

The accompanying official fantasy is that there is no such thing as housing shortage, no such thing as fear, no such thing as coercion or blackmail or violence or rape, when the attacker has access to the only roof the woman has over her head. All sofa surfers, all desperate unofficially resident house sharers as well as all officially resident house sharers, are officially deemed capable of strolling out of their home and walking into alternative accommodation, at any moment.

did they talk about defunding the women's refuges in Brighton etc?
