Thank you so much for this thread. This case is so so important. I hope that Janice Turner and others write about it at the weekend. Sunlight!

Yes it’s interesting how many threads have popped up today. Let’s not forget the big “don’t look at that, look at this —->” on Twitter.

Presumably the fact that the MoJ is a Stonewall champion may influence their interpretation of the law?

yourhairiswinterfire · 03/03/2021 18:42

@Mollyollydolly

Well depressing as it is so much sunlight. The response from some on twitter is telling. They really don't like women talking, and Judicial Review by Judicial Review hopefully winning. Lot of the usual suspects very angry today.
How dare women go to court after being sexually assaulted by males in women's prison to try and stop other women being sexually assaulted by males in women's prison!

The only way anyone can be cool with this is if they don't view women as human beings at all. Women and our human rights (yes, we do have them too) are just a frustrating, inconvenient barrier stopping males getting exactly what they want, when they want it.

Psychopathic.

MaudTheInvincible · 03/03/2021 18:43

Sort of related, in that it talks about the political lobbying that has happened in the UK, and how the present situation with legal challenges left, right and centre came to happen, I found this Lachlan Stuart thread an interesting read mobile.twitter.com/Lachlan_Edi/status/1270274262948028419

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/03/2021 18:48

I am so impressed with FPFW. They are responsible for an awful lot of sunlight at the moment.

Datun · 03/03/2021 18:58

Throughout all the inconsistencies, the contradictions, the epic fails in logic, and the really quite hopeless bias towards male born individuals, the one thing that consistently leaps off the page for me, is that the presence of vulnerable women is always forced as a requirement.

Pronouns, make up, referring to males as females is not sufficient.

The actual presence of women, every single time, is the issue. Using them, and utilising them. Against their will, against their interests, and ignoring or minimising any and all the damage that is done to them as a result. 'We've only catalogued seven instances where, shock, women were attacked by male born individuals when they couldn't escape'. Only SEVEN????

Women, and in most cases, a vulnerable one, is required for this policy to be carried out.

I know you can't win a court case by saying Jesus wept, will you take a look at the misogyny, for fuck's sake.

So I thank God for women like Nicola Williams, and keep prisons single sex, who are able to forensically drill down into the detail of this dreadful law.

Tuesday might be fun then...

Most of the year will be fun. There's a lot of court cases coming up going right into the summer.

ArabellaScott · 03/03/2021 19:03

Thanks for the thread.

It's incredible (almost) that the people have to take the MoJ to court to even consider protecting the safetey of women prisoners.

Let's hope the judgement is the sane one.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2021 19:05

It's really quite blatant how much many TRAs and their male allies despise women.

Dvk5658 · 03/03/2021 19:05

Following and hoping for common sense to prevail.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 03/03/2021 19:11

It's good to see blunt questions asked by Judges, answering with meaningless word salad or flinging accusations of transphobia aren't options here hopefully.

Judge wants to know the reason why defence made the concession that single-sex exceptions apply in prison for the reason that its a service - rather than saying they apply because its a public function. Defence to reply in writing

I'd really really like to see the answer to this referenced in the judgment.

MichelleofzeResistance · 03/03/2021 19:12

It always says so much to me. Where are the voices of outrage from the TRA lobby for the women who were raped, saying this doesn't happen in their name, that #bekind includes everyone and the MoJ need to take responsibility? Where's the empathy that can see past personal politics? Where's sisterhood from TW interested in women's rights and furious that this has been allowed to happen to vulnerable women?

All I see so far is absolute fury at women daring to protest the harm and producing evidence of it that can't be covered up.

Which confirms why sex based laws to protect women remain absolutely necessary.

MichelleofzeResistance · 03/03/2021 19:19

'We've only catalogued seven instances where, shock, women were attacked by male born individuals when they couldn't escape'. Only SEVEN????

Achieved despite apparent risk assessment and supervision.

Women, and in most cases, a vulnerable one, is required for this policy to be carried out. I know you can't win a court case by saying Jesus wept, will you take a look at the misogyny, for fuck's sake.

This.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2021 19:24

I'm glad this thread has run without disruption.

teawamutu · 03/03/2021 19:28

The thing I really like about judges is that they tend to be very smart, complete nit pickers, and disinclined to wring hands and wonder if it's quite nice to ask that question.

The judicial oath pledges to consider cases 'without fear or favour, affection or ill will'.

A bit more of that in other branches of government and business and we wouldn't be in this fucking mess.

TheEnlightenment · 03/03/2021 19:52

I’m quite emotional hearing the judges ask the questions that need asking. Objective reality has to be the basis of any judgement or, as a society, we are lost. Just hearing the Judge refer to biological women was so important. The SNP want to label that hate speech but a High Court Judge is using it.

Chrysanthemum5 · 03/03/2021 19:56

What's happening on Tuesday? There's so many cases right now I've lost track!

The census JR.

Oh of course I did a bit of gardening for that 🤞

Absolutely.

x100

This speaks volumes.

Judicial Reviews are so important. Arguing on twitter with idiots achieves very little. I love the fact I can donate a tenner and actually help to achieve something real. In the end good sense must win out surely, The ONS dig closes tonight.
