Karis Wilson - Canadian teenager sent home from school

A seventeen year-old high school student in British Columbia was told that her choice of outfit made her female teacher and male student teacher feel "uncomfortable". She was sent to the Principal's office and it was suggested that she should go home and change her clothes.

Naturally, she felt upset and humiliated and her father is outraged on her behalf according to several press reports. www.abbynews.com/news/b-c-teen-in-turtleneck-lace-edged-dress-sent-home-from-school-for-inappropriate-outfit/

I don't think humiliating young women for their choice of clothing is right but equally I am not sure that her dress is appropriate for school but I'm old so what do I know?
@missbarbary the young woman is at school. She is not in a nightclub and she is not at work.
Oh for goodness sake . I wondered when I only mentioned work if someone would come along with that silly quibble, but thought no, surely they have the intelligence to realise a school is a work place? It's not a place for leisure or a night club? Clearly I was mistaken.

Nothing is wrong with this imo.. I've seen teenagers wear much more controversial outfits, but Canadian society is very conservative.

SwayingInTime · 27/02/2021 22:34

DD13 wore almost exactly this today, hers was actually silky! With tights and bovver boots there's no problem surely?

Theimpossiblegirl · 27/02/2021 22:38

My dd's version is actually shorter. Surely the whole point of being a teen is to push boundaries and wear stuff that's not for the office.

I teach loads of students wearing similar outfits, it's absolutely fine...but then in the UK we don't have anywhere near the same prudish hang ups the North American continent have!
Have taught in both US & Canadian schools and they are insane in regard to female outfits - boys could literally wear speedos to class and it would be fine HmmHmm

@jamidays you can’t say “Canadian society is very conservative”. It’s a bloody big country and night and day at times between small towns like Kamloops (which probably thinks it’s a city, but it’s wrong) and actual cities. We in an actually city in BC had a look at this and had a laugh. Kids at our schools wear much more revealing and challenging gear all the time. Daily. No one bats an eye. Miniskirts with torn fishnets, tiny belly shirts, anything goes in urban settings. Boys and girls regularly wear pyjamas to school. Unless the school has an actual uniform, then an outfit like this would not get a second glance.
