Okay so I only heard part of this as something else was going on, but it sounded full on trans science.

Did anyone else listen?

That's Genderwang!

Haven't listened, no. Maybe someone could take one for the team and let us know if there are clownfish.

OvaHere · 26/02/2021 14:57

Damn! Someone beat me to the Genderwang joke. Grin

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/02/2021 14:58

I miss BowlofBabelfish so much. I positively pine for her reassuring posts at such times.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 26/02/2021 15:02

I thought this sounded vaguely familiar so did a search - it's a repeat programme and there was a thread at the time when it was first broadcast:

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 26/02/2021 15:02

That's Genderwang!

🤣🤣🤣

Liquorishtoffee · 26/02/2021 15:19

I listened to it. Not sure who the two presenters are (I assume they produced the show too) but I had the urge the throw my radio out the window. I may have sworn and yelled a few insults too.

God it was a pile of one sided nonsense agenda driven crap.

Liquorishtoffee · 26/02/2021 15:20

And yes. There was clownfish. And fungi.

nauticant · 26/02/2021 15:32

It came in two halves. The first half with the lizards, fish, and funghi was science and was fine, then they decided to look at gender (and they actually did mean gender in terms of sex stereotypical behaviour) in animals and then it became ideological instruction about the ways in which behaviour changes sex. Then all the intersex misinformation was being trotted out and Meg-John Barker appeared.

It was like the presenters had been spiked with some potent hallucinogen halfway through the programme.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 26/02/2021 15:34

I saw this first time round. And now they are repeating it??
Do better BBC !
Here's Emma Hilton a neuro developmental biologist addressing the same issue.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 26/02/2021 15:39

Jennifer Graves is a genetics prof but an ideologically captured one who the BBC had to go to Australia to find. Meg-john Barker is a queer theory "writer and creative director " who wrote a book called ""Rewriting the rules" and who presumably went to Australia to find the only biologist who didn't mind her making a massive conceptual leap from clownfish sex to gender, to explain why human sex is a spectrum.

Liquorishtoffee · 26/02/2021 15:40

No balance or questioning. It wasn’t exactly for the enquiring mind was it. YTS day at the BBC?

Cailleach1 · 26/02/2021 15:47

Well, I have to say 'respect' to Emma Hilton.

nauticant · 26/02/2021 15:53

Meg-John Barker. It's a Daily Mail link because at least I can rely upon them not to hide the story behind apologetic words.

Liquorishtoffee · 26/02/2021 15:59

Was that April 1st?

Flapjak · 26/02/2021 16:19

Why is Meg John Barker dressed as a flat capped northern pidgeon fancier?

stumbledin · 26/02/2021 16:31

After I posted this I thought ooops! should maybe have listened. I really only heard the end and thought WtF?

Thanks for link to earlier thread. Hadn't realised it was a repeat.

How many years is it now they have been pumping out this false science with the credible (?) branding of the BBC?

Quite a while now.

I remember a R4 programme where someone was saying how they had to plan where they were going to pee outside the home because they felt so uneasy using public loos. I assumed it was a someone who had been attacked in a public loo, or had a phobia about using public conveniences - but it wasn’t.

Then they stated to go on about how everyone in the loos was just gawping at them or tried to talk to them (either shooting them out, or telling them how wonderful they were - really, who talks to anyone in a loo?) and they went on about their glowing aura, when I concluded that they were just rather immature and a bit bonkers.

This must’ve been 4+ years ago I think (I was walking to my old work).

Iamhangingin · 26/02/2021 17:27

I caught it and was annoyed about the intersex stuff. Also said that people with non-conforming genitalia were part of this sex spectrum and proved sex was not binary. My son has hypospadias and he is definitely male (it's a sex specific condition) and it's really insulting and insensitive to be promoting the idea if your penis is a bit different your not really 100% male. Can't see how this is progressive......

DisappearingGirl · 26/02/2021 19:08

That's Genderwang!

@Flapjak

Why is Meg John Barker dressed as a flat capped northern pidgeon fancier?
Because that shows she is northern, unlike a softy southern. As Barker said in her widely mocked BACP guidance on gender and sexuality:

‘In some northern working-class contexts femininity is associated with strength and aggression.’

But then I believe Dr Barker identifies as a they so I'm not sure where that puts her on the flat cap and whippets scale.
