"The census has always asked “What is your sex”?
We believe that people should answer the census accurately and honestly.
We think that this is the best way to collect the information needed to understand the population and to plan and fund public services.
Counting the number of male and female citizens is vital for the census, and because the census sets the standard for other data-collection across society."

The website has a 3 stage action plan, a comprehensive set of FAQs, and a useful resources section that provides more background.
15 groups collaborated on this campaign and clicking on their logos on the home page takes you direct to the individual website of each organisation.

Hope some of you find it useful.

@LemonSwan

Can someone who has done it please clarify - in the compulsory questions is it asking sex or gender?

I am happy obviously to tick my sex in the compulsory section but will not fill out if its asking my gender.

Is this the issue here?

The sex question is asking for your legal sex. So if you have a GRC then that will be your legal sex. However the census just want it to be what you can prove with an official document. Passport/drivers license type thing. Most can be altered just by asking. There are still some man Friday peeps with m on their drivers license. And I know the passport office just need a letter to change sex marker.

Is sex/gender on a driving licence? It's not on mine.

Sorry if I have missed something - can someone enlighten me about a couple of things: 1. the "asking for many paper copies" point; and 2. filling in more women than actually live here - what is this about/how and why do I do this?

Yes it is - but in code Smile

See image attached for the example on the website linked below:

Driver number (5): Driving licence number format explained.

JONES – Displaying first five letters of your surname. If surname is less than five characters in length, the remaining spaces will comprise of the digit 9.

849339 – First and last numbers are the year of birth. Second and third numbers are month of birth. (Note: in the case of female driving licence holders, ‘5’ is added to the second digit, this means that the second digit will be 5 or 6). The fourth and fifth digits are the day of the month of your birth.

TS – The first two initials of your forenames. If you have only one initial then the second character will be a ‘9’.

8AD – Computer check digits.

** – Licence numbers

It's just my own idea. Each sex is counted for the purpose of forward planning. So I've decided to add a lot of women so that women are overrepresented and more funding will be put aside. No one else has to do this obviously but as the whole census is about useless I thought some good might come of this. Plus the letter and if nothing else I've caused a headache.

It occurs to me that on that basis, the more male people identify as female the better the provision for women ought to be.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

It occurs to me that on that basis, the more male people identify as female the better the provision for women ought to be.
But if they say they are male on the sex question and female on the gender question, surely that means trans? And therefore trans things get the funding. Or is that just my interpretation?

Btw I'm not against trans things getting funding, but not to the detriment of women.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/03/2021 19:35

I thought the worry was that because they can change their sex on official documents at will, they will say they are female and that their gender is female, not that they'll say one of each and demonstrate that they are trying to be both.

FemaleAndLearning · 08/03/2021 20:28

Where is the guidance to help me complete the census? I can't find it on ONS. I want to see what it says about Q3 do I can share with family and friends.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 08/03/2021 21:04

Please please please don't botch your data in protest. It completely undermines our arguement. We need robust data, that is the defense and FPFW are challenging the guidance that says 'any legal document.' If the guidance were altered to say legal sex (or even better birth sex), then all is good. The sex question is mandatory. The gender identity question is optional so just don't complete it if you don't have a gender identity. Let's leave it as late as possible and coordinate with a paper version as suggested on the website.

Anovaneway · 08/03/2021 21:14

The census does ask ‘what is your sex?’

What do you expect them to do, go round policing whether or not people put the sex that matches their passport?

AdHominemNonSequitur · 08/03/2021 21:53

It is illegal to fill it in incorrectly. We expect them not to hedge the sex question by using the guidance to say sex on legal documents. Passport and driver's licence can be updated by self ID. It will not therefore be illegal to put an incorrect legal sex without a GRC.

Given Ian Diamonds comments on the Andrew Marr show, this seems worth a shot
