Sex in the Census 2021 website launched; 3 part action plan

"The census has always asked “What is your sex”?
We believe that people should answer the census accurately and honestly.
We think that this is the best way to collect the information needed to understand the population and to plan and fund public services.
Counting the number of male and female citizens is vital for the census, and because the census sets the standard for other data-collection across society."

The website has a 3 stage action plan, a comprehensive set of FAQs, and a useful resources section that provides more background.
15 groups collaborated on this campaign and clicking on their logos on the home page takes you direct to the individual website of each organisation.

Hope some of you find it useful.

We got a paper letter telling us to do the census online. We rang up the freephone number on the letter & asked for a paper copy of the census. Then we can write what we think on it. EG I am of the FEMALE sex & he is of the MALE sex. Not gender. We don't' identify,' we just are.

I donated to the court case. Got email saying they have made the full amount. There will be more court cases you can bet.

Dear RS&B2

Thank you for your email about the 2021 national census.
Let me say at once that I am entirely in agreement with the tenor of your remarks in all areas and I share your indignation at what is proposed.
Sadly, much of what Welsh Government does is driven by their ‘woke’ agenda which pervades so many aspects of society and much of their thinking from sex and gender to statutes and from climate change to being a nation of sanctuary. Being seen to be ‘woke’ appears to be of overriding importance.
I can assure you that I will continue to oppose this agenda, both within and without the Senedd, and I just wish there was more support from colleagues but, sadly, because of the distorted electoral system which gives Labour a majority despite winning only a third of the vote, the views of those elected frequently does not reflect the view of the general public.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
MS

Hello RitaSue... interesting reply from your MS. Shame they lumped in climate change and sanctuary cities though. Are they UKIP gammons perchance?

MsFogi · 05/03/2021 00:12

Great to see there is a coherent plan - I will certainly be doing this.

Nice to get an honest response not “this is controversial so while I do agree I can’t say anything in public”type response. I am an eco warrior though 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I'm doing it too, just with more people than actually live here. All extras will be women, with the same letter.
MummBraTheEverLeaking · 05/03/2021 11:17

I've ordered a paper one too. Sorry if I'm being thick but I thought it was just one census form to complete for everyone in the house (me, DD and DH) right?

The FAQs on the site mention individual censuses and household ones??

Diaryofamadwoman · 05/03/2021 15:09

If the judicial review is on the 9th does anyone know how long we will have to wait to hear the outcome?

I think it's a privacy thing. We dont all live with family so we may not want our details shared among other house mates. So afaik if you want it's one person fills in for household or separate for each person.
MummBraTheEverLeaking · 06/03/2021 11:25

@Gurufloof Ah of course 🤦‍♀️, makes sense now, thank you Smile

MenaiMna · 06/03/2021 11:36

Great! Received my papers yesterday and have been hoping for a resource like this!

NoraEphronsNeck · 06/03/2021 15:36

@TheShadowyFeminist

Boycott. Nothing less will have any real impact.

At what point does it become clearer that the loss of the integrity of the census is as serious as it gets in terms of how significant the impact across so many areas will be.

It's like there's simply no appetite to either get serious or show solidarity to make the prosecution of 1000's of women as difficult as possible.

But then, I'm not a 'leader' with a stake in monetising women's concerns am I? They'll happily take our cash, but not even contemplate disruption tactics when it gets to the crunch.

I agree that boycott would be the most efficient way to make an impact.

And then possible class actions to fight any subsequent fines.

MPs are just brushing it off but (hopefully hundreds of) thousands of households not completing it will make a mockery of the whole thing.

I'm in Wales too, would love to know which MS that was if you wanted to dm me - no worries if not obviously Grin
SultanaSofa · 06/03/2021 18:09

I've received my household access code. Have hidden it away, and am awaiting the paper form I requested.

Numicon · 07/03/2021 09:06

I'm tempted to put 'superstraight' as my gender. Or religion.

peak2021 · 07/03/2021 10:22

I see the template letter is now available. I will not use it word for word, as I am not sorry in my objection. I do not believe in fake apologies. We should not be apologetic in wanting women to be safe.

Very good point. I am not sorry either.
howard97A · 07/03/2021 12:12

@Ereshkigalangclegaliasundercover
I actually do think this paper copy and letter plan is worth doing. I think it will send a message to the ONS if lots of people request paper copies as they will want as many people to complete online as possible.

The impact would be greater if we waited for a field officer to call, and requested our paper copy at that point.

@aliasundercover
The gender for the gender question I ticked 'no' (eg I don't have the same gender I was born with)

Stonewall will be hoping that lots of people will tick ‘no’, to justify demands for increased funding.

LemonSwan · 07/03/2021 13:05

Can someone who has done it please clarify - in the compulsory questions is it asking sex or gender?

I am happy obviously to tick my sex in the compulsory section but will not fill out if its asking my gender.

Is this the issue here?

Biscuitsanddoombar · 07/03/2021 13:24

census2021 has a paid partnership with pink news???

twitter.com/oliverburkeman/status/1368546452151164930?s=21

I’ve requested my paper copy and May decide to be superstraight too

LabbyNoona · 07/03/2021 13:30

Placemarking to read later... thanks all

stillamum22 · 07/03/2021 15:34

Paper copy on way, poised to write furious letter (sorry not bloody sorry), e mailing friends and family, and local MS.

Meanwhile..... biodegradable raffia (in suffragette colours of course!) labels, pens, friends ready to go and decorate the local area at the ready. Oh and a suffragette from my area lined up to be a 'guest' in my home when I complete the form. If I get questioned, I will point out that having a suffragette who passed 70 years ago as my visitor is as likely as a man saying he can claim to be a biological woman!!

Outoftheshadow · 07/03/2021 16:06

First ever mumsnet post. Well first ever social
media post actually.

Thanks to all the brave people putting their head above the parapet and doing what they can to bring light to this and doing something about it. Whilst it may not be dramatic as some would hope, having a ‘Tianamen Square’ moment seems to do nothing to affect real change; if anything seeing how brutally authority comes down in dissenters is more likely to push people into the shadows and accept what is happening to them whether they agree or not. Grass roots movements that come with ‘smaller’ victories build up the courage of those of us who would otherwise stay quiet (certainly in my case). I’ll be joining and donating to all I can to support those actually doing something. I only wish I had their courage!

Gurufloof · 07/03/2021 18:09

Ah bugger, yes this would be better.
I think all my paper copies may be lost in the mail and I shall tell the nice census officer I wanted 14 for each house. I have yet to make up names for these women so if you have a funny/catchy/villainous/sarcastic type name, feel free to let me know.
