Apologies if this has been done before.

I can't get onto the gcacademics website as it has been blocked by my web browser. Has anyone had this happen to them as well? Or does anyone have any contacts with the folk running it to let them know.

"This site has been blocked by Web Safe. It's listed as having content that’s inappropriate for children, involving either pornography, hate, crime, drugs, violence, hacking, self harm or suicide."

there are lots of new testimonials on there from when I last looked - it is absolutely horrendous.

So much of the trouble with this is that it translates to a removal of safeguarding in universities. Bristol Uni allows students to register under their 'preferred sex' rather than birth sex which then makes their single sex accommodation offerings completely meaningless.

Oxford Uni putting up signs explicitly telling girls not to challenge or question anyone in the toilets 'who may not look like they belong there' (I can't remember the exact quote but it was an open invitation to anyone who fancied going into the ladies)

These are all issues that make me so worried for my daughters - the eldest is very keen to go to university in four years time. Given that there is minimal risk of conviction as a deterrent to rapists, and given what I remember of boys at university - I'm not sure I can bear the idea of her going at the moment.

I imagine this tweet might have something to do with the malicious reporting.

I'm afraid that it is as we feared. I think that there has been mass reporting or someone in the bowels of the internet has decided that gender critical academics should not be listened to.

We'll end up on the Dark Web at this rate.

So just to summarise

  • t.co/jOWaoNH8UT site, set up to give examples of academic speech suppression around gender, has been suppressed by some servers as 'hate'.
  • the twitter account associated @network_gc has been shadowbanned.

@joannaccherry @jgro_the

This is Kafkaesque (literally)

Kettlingur · 19/02/2021 10:53

Fucking scary is what it is.

RevIMJolly · 19/02/2021 10:58

I think that this is next level chilling.

It's bad enough that people get chucked off of Twitter, but I really thought that we had reached new depths with the detrans folk being shunted off Reddit.

But to limit people's access to this kind of information is beyond scary.

I now have the earworm of "A Voice Crying in the Wilderness" in my head. This whole thing makes me appreciate KS and all those brave women even more.

I am with Talk Talk and use Firefox as a browser, and I got into the site immediately using the link.

OvaHere · 19/02/2021 11:45

I get this message when I go to the page. I can access it with a VPN though.

It's not particular to this site though. I have the same issue with a lot of sites including Stonewall which I also need to use a VPN to get on to.

I suspect it's maybe a compatibility issue between BT parental software and the Safari browser. Until a couple of years ago I would get a pop up box on blocked sites where I could submit my password to gain access. This rarely if never happens now, I just get the error message and have to use a VPN if I want to view.

The parental settings still work as they're supposed to for DH who uses Windows and probably Firefox or Chrome. He still gets the enter your password pop up.

It's possible the gcacademics is blocked in some places due to malicious reporting but in my case I think it's a BT/Apple issue because I don't see anyone putting Stonewall on a blacklist.

Someone has asked for it to be taken off a block list of “hate sites” Hmm used by ISPs and has been reclassified as “Educational Institutions” so it should work OK now - until the next time. This needs to get to the press and politicians.

It’s probably been mass-reported. Pisses me off that they’ll probably get away with this unless some idiot brags about it.

Another good guy who helped get it un-blocked on that list - it might still be blacklisted on other lists though.

I can access the site on my laptop (using Virgin broadband), but still not on my phone (Virgin contract and Virgin broadband)

Not sure what this means?

It being blocked at all is truly frightening stuff.

OvaHere · 19/02/2021 12:50

That's interesting MoleSmokes I've just checked and I now get the standard BT add this site to your allowed list message. So something has changed yes.

Also interesting to note is that contrary to what I posted above Stonewall and other sites must be on some kind of ISP blocklist too.

I remember years ago people used to talk about how wonderful the web was because it was impossible to censor it.

Chaotica · 20/02/2021 22:18

Working for me now! Thanks all. And thanks @SkeeterP for helping to set it up.

littlbrowndog · 20/02/2021 23:29

Am on it virgin media seems ok

AdHominemNonSequitur · 20/02/2021 23:54

Talk about making our case for us.

Tighten up your internet security and sweep for malware everyone, make sure you have 2 factor authentication set up. Things are going to get rough for a while. The techy zealots are loosing their grip and feeling cornered, likely to lash out.

stumbledin · 21/02/2021 00:11

@SkeeterP

I'm on virgin media and have no problems accessing the site, so does seem to be about those with filters set.

But (sorry bit of a derail) having got to your web site I noticed that what comes up in the web tab is the word "Home". Usually this means that who ever set up the web page left the default word "home" in the html code for the title ie Home where the usual practice is to put the name of the web site as this is how search engines find web sites.

Although whe I googled the site it was found quite easily!
