I've long admired Bel Mooney since I learnt of her connection to Sands.

Her article 'The Deletion of Womanhood' published by the Daily Mail on 17th Feb makes me want to stand and applaud.

It's both eloquent and brave.
Bravo

Just read the JSP article ... it was actually quite disappointing, if that article was anything to go by she doesn't get it. And used cis FFS Confused

when the shit hits the fan, it's the screaming harridans who have your back.

I read the Janet Street porter one because I was a bit surprised to see it - I've a vague recollection of her being on the gendery side of things on loose women. She's obviously started to see some of the implications but it's all a bit confused. Confusing straight & 'cisgender', thinking the court ruling about freddy's child's birth certificate was unfair on freddy.

Floisme · 18/02/2021 10:29

Thanks for the links Sunset. Yeah that's a very muddled article by Janet Street Porter. But I must admit, I'd have put money on her being an advocate for gender ideology so, if even people like her are starting to question it, then that's kind of interesting.

Onedropbeat · 18/02/2021 10:31

I can’t get angry about her comment * I call myself a feminist and yet I have nothing in common (except biology) with screaming harridans who loathe men.*

The way it comes across to me is in a way I would probably chuckle and agree

Being a feminist doesn’t mean you have to hate men and shout about it is all she’s trying to say IMO

persistentwoman · 18/02/2021 10:36

I think Janet SP is desperately trying to speak in her normal "accepts no bullshit' tone without being cancelled. Can you imagine how the TRAs would like to cancel her? She knows that chest feeding, cervix havers etc is all creepy male bollox but she's got a career to protect.

Beamur · 18/02/2021 10:44

It's a good article. I don't think she is calling feminists harridans either, she's making a comparison. It's a direct reflection of the paragraph above it suggesting that many trans voices are being drowned out by a vocal few.

Malahaha · 18/02/2021 11:15

That's how I read it too.

But -- she said it out loud, in a big newspaper! TWANW!
I wonder if the TRA's will go after the DM to get her sacked?

Malahaha · 18/02/2021 11:19

^ this was directed at onedropsbeat's comment about the harridans. It's an analogy; many transpeople are quiet minding their own business, and not to be convoluted with bat-waving TRAs.

It's really good to see journalists no longer afraid to say TWANW.

Floisme · 18/02/2021 11:35

I think it's a very tired, lazy cliche and that, as a professional writer, never mind as a feminist, Bel Mooney should be capable of better than that. But I wouldn't want that to detract from the rest of the article.

RoyalCorgi · 18/02/2021 11:56

Aye, lass. If the screaming harridans had been politely sitting with our knees together and our hands in our laps, you wouldn't even fucking know that this shit was going down.

This is absolutely right. And it's always been the same - it was the screaming harridans who got us the vote, who got us the Equal Pay Act, who got us abortion rights etc. And now it's the screaming harridans who will absolutely fight this men's rights bullshit till our dying breath.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 12:24

I could go for a 'screaming harridan' T-shirt, tbh.

RozWatching · 18/02/2021 12:27

I mean, whatever. I don't actually need to be thanked for doing the legwork, because I know what I'm doing is the right thing to do. But jaysus it'd be nice if the Janey-Come-Latelies would at least hold off the nasty barbs.

Maybe feminists like Bel Mooney who have a platform and are only now starting to speak out could go and explain themselves to the increasing number of men who are screaming 'where are the fucking feminists'?

As a feminist, she must know that there are others who have been trying to warn about all this for YEARS. She could have acknowledged these women instead of deriding the harridans, whoever they are.
