Johann Lamont, Scottish Labour, defending the Equality Act in the recent debate in Scottish parliament on the new 'hate crime' bill.

' “It’s clear in law there are two sexes, and that definitions matter, and if we’re going to change from the language of the Equality Act, I think there is a responsibility on the Cabinet Secretary to explain why.

“We know that there is actually in some places a debate about whether indeed there are only two sexes or whether sex is on a spectrum, and I don’t think we should ignore that debate. '

Thank goodness someone is raising these questions, anyway.

In what world Otis it controversial to answer that?

At last these questions are being asked in places where they cannot be ignored. Well done Johann Lamont.

It’s quite worrying that he refuses to answer this question and one he certainly knows the answer to.

Makes an independent Scotland a very frightening proposition.

ArabellaScott · 17/02/2021 20:55

Agree, all. The more they pander to this unscientific nonsense the less likely I am to vote for SNP and/or independence.

Comment on it from 'free to disagree' group:

'The fact that elected officials in Scotland are scared to venture a view on the nature of biological sex shows exactly why criminal legislation covering discussions on sex and trans issues more widely could be problematic. Yet, that is exactly what Humza Yousaf is proposing with his Hate Crime Bill. The bill would usher in a raft of new offences on the ‘stirring up of hatred’, including on the grounds of ‘transgender identity’. Citizens who behave in an ‘abusive’ manner with the intent of ‘stirring up hatred’ against trans people could find themselves facing a prison sentence. It’s unclear what ‘hatred’ means for the purposes of the bill.'

Just seen this comment from forwomen Scotland:

'The Justice committee has published an outline agenda and key paper for its additional roundtable on freedom of expression to be held next Monday. The paper proposes several options for a generic amendment on freedom of expression.
FWS have been invited to attend as witnesses, as have our friends at MurrayBlackburnMackenzie.
We believe that far more robust and specific freedom of expression amendments are needed. '

'Some campaigners argue that sex, like gender, is fluid and on a spectrum, while others, including Ms Lamont, argue it is binary and immutable.'

We're mammals. Monkeys. The most successful and invasive animal the world has.

He thinks that sexual reproduction amongst humans is guesswork?

Hmmmm.

Igneococcus · 18/02/2021 06:27

Some people think the earth is flat but we don't protect their bonkers views to the point where challenging this believe can see the challengers charged with a hate crime.

BlackForestCake · 18/02/2021 07:19

The problem with freedom of expression amendments is that you then have a situation which is the reverse of what it should be, where you can only say the things that are on the "protected" list.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 18/02/2021 07:23

Pretending that you don’t understand where babies come from is so fucking decadent. Tell a pregnant rape victim that sex is a spectrum. Jesus

Hope somebody will listen to the adults in the room.

WendyTestaburger · 18/02/2021 07:58

Will he be introducing prisons for all these other sexes?

BlackForestCake · 18/02/2021 08:05

The other sexes other than male and female, however many there are, never seem to commit any crimes, so don't need prisons.

Igneococcus · 18/02/2021 08:07

I want someone explain to me how more than two sexes works within our current understanding of evolution.

BlackForestCake · 18/02/2021 08:12

"Understanding of evolution" is a white supremacist dogwhistle.

Igneococcus · 18/02/2021 08:14

Thanks BlackForestCake it had temporarily slipped my mind, there'll be a special high security wing in the gulag for the biologists, I assume.

Lordamighty · 18/02/2021 08:17

Is that the next step, making believing in biology a hate crime?
I mean this stuff would be funny if it wasn’t so fucking terrifying for women.

Selkiesarereal · 18/02/2021 08:29

At this rate gulag will be a far more interesting place than an independent Scotland!

Sophoclesthefox · 18/02/2021 08:39

Quite astonishing.

Two sexes. Sexually dimorphic species. Billions of different humans with their own special presentations and preferences, but we can all be sorted into one of two sexes.

It’s not just that the definition is right there in the Equality Act, which is not for the Scottish government to decide doesn’t apply, it’s right there in reality for gods sake. Why are they acting as if it was some esoteric concept that you need advanced multiple degrees in biology, genomics, sociology and theology to interpret?

Literal babes in arms and my slightly dim dog can reliably sort male from female.

ArabellaScott · 18/02/2021 10:05

I think Scotland is on course to be the first gulag of the new gender ideology, tbh.
