Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Nonsensical youtube video

Hi all, I watched a youtube video the other day from someone who I guess might be called a TRA. Guessing it's better not to name names. In it, she likened JK Rowling's position that you can't change sex, to Christians saying that marriage can only take place between men and women. I came to this video because a younger American writer (in her 30s) had linked to it. I was so dismayed that this younger writer who I admire and think is thoughtful and intelligent had seen anything of value in it. The arguments were just nonsense. Although this wasn't the only problematic part of the video, there is simply no meaningful comparison as far as I can tell between sex as a biological fact which is fixed and immutable and marriage as entirely a social construct that can mean anything we more or less collectively agree to. Sort of ... like gender, right?

I have no real point to make about this, I just felt sad because it is so infuriating and frustrating to see such arguments being made and supposedly intelligent people going along with them. Aaaaargh.

It's so baffling, like an alternate reality. I don't understand it either.Confused

The arguments were just nonsense.

Yes.

It's so baffling, like an alternate reality

Yes.

The arguments don't make any sense - they're just being regurgitated. It's a "paralogic" where you make a serious of statements as if one leads to the other, when that's not the case at all.

James Lindsay did a very long piece on this recently - this is the audio podcast version:

The essay's a massive read, but try the podcast.

I was going to post the description of the podcast here, but I think it's got a few keywords that are banned for FWR. Follow the link.

He's not optimistic, and I find it hard to disagree.

I've just listened to the James Lindsay podcast. Very interesting.
